Hi, I'm Kai (or Pacifico, depending on what city I'm in - sometimes I go by Jake in Portland).
Currently I'm a junior at Bellevue Big Picture School. A big part of my school is being offered the opportunity to do internships at sites of interest, and I've jumped at these chances to explore issues in society that have affected me throughout my life. I've done work with social justice organizations like Seattle Young People's Project. They helped me with advocacy and finding a voice for myself, and I used this newfound ability to convey my thoughts throughout the community. I became a peer leader with the Service Board, racking up community service hours by informing others about issues and what they can do to help.
Recently I got accepted into the ACLU Summer Institute. It's this amazing opportunity where I get to travel to Washington, D.C. and further discuss topics that are very real and relevant to our modern-day society with other youth from across the country who are as passionate about these problems as I am.
From the ACLU Website:
"The ACLU’s Summer Advocacy Institute will bring together a diverse group of students entering their junior and senior years of high school from across the United States to participate in an advanced, firsthand learning experience for the next generation of social justice advocates. Through an intensive 7-day program, students will learn directly from lawyers, lobbyists, community activists, journalists, and other experts working to defend the civil rights and liberties critical to a free and open society. "
I'm so excited and honored to be selected to attend this event, but travel costs alongside the cost of living on Georgetown University campus for a week places the cost around $2,500 dollars that my family and I don't have to spare.
The program starts on June 19, but the deadline for paying all of the fees is May 5. If you could donate any amount at all, I'd be incredibly grateful.
