Kaidens Bed

My name is kloee, my husband mike and I had our son Kaiden ling in august of 2011. I had an uneventful pregancy and delivery but when kaiden was born he was unresponsive. The doctors intubated him and flew him by air ambulance from kelowna down to bc childrens hospital, when we arrived we were told he was completely brain dead and will most likely not live 24 hours. They told us we could take him off the ventilator and monitors and stay with him until he passed away. we would not give up so easily and asked for him to stay on the machines for the time being. Over the next few days he miraculously pulled though. An extensive MRI was done on kaidens brain and it was determined that he would most likely never see, hear, eat walk or talk as well as possibly have epilepsy and cognitive difficulties. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
By the time we took kaiden home after 2 months in hospital, we still werent sure what his abilities would be but were optimistic.
After 3 years of extensive therapy and many visits to childrens hospital, today kaiden is walking, can see and hear, has had his feeding tube removed, is learning sign language, and has recently been diagnosed with autism. He is  doing exceptionally well considering his condition.
That being said a few of the things we are having difficulty with are: his sleeping arrangements and some behavioral issues. We have tried everything from cribs, playpens, and beds on the floor, to gates across his door, padding on the walls, and most recently a bed tent. We have come to the conclusion that his sensory issues are causing him to throw himself around in his sleep, waking himself up when hitting something hard (ie: the wall, or floor) as often as once an hour throughout the night. We have tried putting a gate across his doorway and closing his door, this causes kaiden to bang his head into the door/wall. The most successful intervention we have used has been the playpen. He can now climb over the side and leave his room during the night which is an extreme safety concern. The playpen was working because when he threw himself into the mesh, it didnt wake him up or injure him, he also likes the enclosed space aspect which is why we tried the bed tent, but he also needs to see whats going on outside of the bed which is why the bed tent didn't work.
Thankfully we have finally found a solution! we have discovered The Safety Sleeper. This is a bed designed specifically for kids like kaiden, It is a fully enclosed mesh bed enclosure which comes with padded bars and stabilizing straps which attaches to a bed frame or box spring. The mesh is similar to the playpen mesh and the zippers are only accessible from the outside so he cannot leave the bed without us knowing (for safety reasons) we believe this bed would allow our entire family to have a goodnights sleep on a regular basis which is something many people take for granted. The downside to the safety sleeper is that because it meets safety standards and is a specialty product it costs around 3800$ before shipping and tax. Being a Low income family with a special needs child we are unable to afford this huge expense, but our families safety depends on it.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and every dollar counts as we get closer to a good nights sleep!
