Hi my name is Tina and this is Kai my gorgeous husky cross German shepherd. He is three and a half years old. He is a goofy boy always wanting to play with other dogs, loves being chased and chasing. He is marvellous with people and children and good when runners and cyclists go by. Never barks or growls and I can take a bone from him without any fuss.
On 1st August 2024 Kai was involved in a three second scuffle with another dog, a Belgian Malanoi. Neither dog had any mark on them however the owner sustained a small injury to his hand, a small puncture wound, sore thumb and tendon. If I see a dog on its lead I would always put Kai on his lead however in this instance I saw the dog was off his lead running around and felt secure for Kai to go up and say hi.
There was a bushy bend separating myself and the owner and I just glimpsed him grabbing his dog and putting his lead on. By that time Kai had gone up to the dog and this is when the altercation took place.
Unfortunately the man had got his hand in the way and sustained a small injury which could have come from his dog or Kai.
The man said to the police that Kai had bit him and then attacked his dog but this is completely not true, Kai would never bite anyone or anything, I am 100% sure about this.
As I am sure many dog owners are aware, now and again dogs will take a dislike to one another for whatever reason and although it sounds bad it’s all ‘handbags’
However Belgian Malanois are bred to be biters and used by the police. It’s possible that due to suddenly being grabbed by his owner he became defensive when Kai trotted up, showing Kai aggression and Kai just stood up for himself. As I said before neither dog sustained an injury, Kai wandered off sniffing.
To cut a long story short the man called 999 and the police turned up at my door 3 weeks later.
I was charged with being the owner of a dangerous dog out of control with injury under the dangerous dog act.
I pleaded not guilty in court and my trial is set for May of next year.
I have numerous videos of Kai with other dogs and people, playing nicely and lining up with other dogs to take a treat from a stranger. I have statements from people that know Kai and myself highlighting his non aggressiveness and wonderful temperament especially with smaller dogs.
I have attached some of these videos.
I am determined to clear Kai’s name and not have a criminal record and requested a trial at a local Magistrates Court. I do not earn much as I work part time having semi retired but I still don’t qualify for legal aid.
I have instructed a legal firm to represent me and the cost for a barrister on the trial day is £3000. I don’t want to represent myself but would wish for the skill of a legal professional.
I have already paid £500 to my solicitor. I have no savings whatsoever. Unfortunately as well, my car has had some problems and this is going to take a chunk of money I was hoping to save for the barrister.
I am single and have no other income to rely on. I am turning to Go Fund Me in the hope I can have some support in raising the fee for the barrister.
I am determined that this awful man is not going to have Kai’s life ruined by being told he has to be muzzled and on a lead for the rest of his life.
By the time the trial comes round it will be nearly two years since the incident. During that time Kai has been running around with his many friends, at a variety of venues meeting new dogs and people all the time without any further incidences whatsoever.
If you can chip in any amount however small I would be so grateful.
