Will Owens and his Continued Fight with a Debilitating Brain Tumor

When Will was a teenager, he had a benign brain tumor that required 3 different surgeries to remove. This tumor affected his vision and physical growth. Because of the location of the tumor and the fact that it was against his optic nerve, it could not be completely removed, as it would have damaged the nerve, leaving Will blinded. Will was told that there was always a possibility that his tumor would continue to grow in the future.
Eight years later, at 24 years old, Will began to have vision issues again and it was confirmed that a large tumor had grown back from the tiny bit that was left behind all those years ago. On Tuesday, May 5th, Will had an 11 hour surgery at MD Anderson in Houston to attempt to once again remove the tumor. The surgeon was confident that the entire tumor would be able to be removed without damaging the optic nerve. Unfortunately, that was not achievable. In order to save Will's vision, the surgeon had no choice but to leave the portion of the tumor that is pressed against the optic nerve. The bright side is that the nerve was so weak from the size of the tumor that Will was close to becoming blinded, but they were able to remove enough of the tumor to take pressure off it and save Will's vision. Because they were unable to remove the entire tumor, Will must have radiation to shrink what is left of the tumor. This will also pose a risk to Will's vision.
Will has a family of his own now- his wife Caitlyn, and one year old son Casen. He will undoubtedly acquire very high medical bills due to this condition. He will have to travel frequently back and forth from Buda to Houston for radiation and follow up appointments. Fortunately, Will and Caitlyn have family in Houston that they are able to stay with. Due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, Will is not allowed to have any visitors. This is especially hard on Will and his family. Imagine waking up from brain surgery unable to be comforted by your loved ones, or not being able to see that your loved one is okay following extremely invasive brain surgery.
