I wanted to reach out to all parents of college students about a scam that just happened to a girl that lives with us. She was homeless and came to live with us back in October of last year. She was accepted into Siena and throughout the summer, worked many hours a week trying to save up enough money to pay for college. This morning on her way to class, she received a phone call from "Amazon" saying that someone opened up an account in her name and purchased a phone. She believed all they said because they even told her their name and transferred her over to the federal crime investigator, who they said was Kenneth A Blanko. This person told her he was in touch with the police and that she needed to take out $2100 from her bank account, get money cards and put money into an encrypted account. They kept her on the phone for 3 hours. She even said she needed to talk to me, but they told her that since it was an open investigation, she wasn't able to talk with anyone about it. I feel utterly sick for her. Here is a college student who has worked so hard to make a life for herself, and these terrible people in our world did this to her. I know it is definitely a lesson learned, but she definitely isn't a person that needs that lesson right now. We are trying to put our son through Siena as well and help her in any way possible, but as we all know, it is very expensive.
Please make your college students aware of these scams. We are hoping to raise the money she lost during this scam. All money raised will go toward her college education.
