Ethen is a twelve year old boy who was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at the age of three. In the last nine years, Ethen's disease has progressed slowly. He was independent with no concerns in regards to walking, dressing and toileting. He was and is very interested in helping others. Ethen and a classmate along with Mr. M worked to form a band named "The Ford Fairlanes". They cut a CD called "Tonight the Ford Fairlanes" with proceeds to Muscular Dystrophy Canada. In May, they were interviewed by Susan Hay on "Making a Difference". The next day, after this was filmed, Ethen's world come down around him. Ethen had a fall that broke his left femur in two spots and was rushed to hospital. In the following days he underwent two surgeries to set his leg. The surgeon had to use a rod and nails as well as plates with a screw holding his leg together.
After several months of rehab with his parents home from work to look after him full time, Ethen has been left immobile, he requires his wheelchair and full time supervision. Through all of this, Ethen remained positive.
With the nature of the disease being unpredictable, there is no way of knowing how quickly the disease will take him. Ethen's parents have a hard time, at times balancing readiness with making things as normal as they can for Ethen.
To prepare for the future, his parents chose to move in to a condo that was barrier free and would make Ethen's life as normal as possible. Ethen was able to move through their home and community with ease. Without knowing what was required to ready the bathrooms, they left them to renovate last. One has a Step in Shower and a tub in the other.
Now with the reality of requiring a roll-in shower and a bathroom that will accommodate a wheel chair, his parents are faced with the reality of finding the funds in order for Ethen to become as independent as possible once again. This kind of reno is expensive. A quote of $15,000 has beenreceived from a reputable company who caters to accessibilty.
We hope you can help make this a reality for Ethen and his family. Show a young, caring boy who is full of pure generosity that the world is as caring as he is.
