Hello Beautiful People! My name is Shatera Keys, and I am raising funds on behalf of one of my best friends, Tiffany Nicole Downer and her family.
On January 1, 2025, Tiffany was taken to the hospital by her husband, Eric due to her feeling very ill and being in an immense amount of pain in her abdomen. After running tests and having scans taken, it was revealed that Tiffany was in liver failure. The doctor told her that if she had've waited a few more days, she probably wouldn't have lived. What a way to start the new year! They kept her in the hospital for a couple of days and set her up with appointments with specialists to determine next steps in this process.
Tiffany was sent home on January 4, 2025 but had to return to the emergency room on January 6, 2025 and was readmitted to the hospital. At that time, doctors said that her liver enzyme levels were elevating which was the opposite of what they'd hoped. On January 10, 2025, doctors revealed to Tiffany and her family that her levels had gotten worse. The G.I. doctor said based on her CT scan results, there was nothing more they could do. At that point she not only was dealing with the effects of a failing liver, but she also was fighting a colon infection as well. The doctor told them that his focus was making Tiffany comfortable and possibly getting her expedited to the transplant list.
On January 11, 2025, Tiffany was advised that a specialist at MUSC in Charleston wanted to take on her case and try his best to get her on the transplant list due to her age and how sick she was. On January 12, 2025, Tiffany was transported to MUSC in Charleston and began testing to ensure she was a candidate for a transplant. She passed all testing and was added to the list. They said this was the fastest they had ever seen someone added to the list. A couple of days later, Tiffany was told there was a liver for her and all they needed to do was test it to make sure it was viable. It was viable, but it went to someone else because they were a little sicker than her, but a delay is not a denial! While waiting on her new liver, Tiffany's kidneys began to fail, and she was started on dialysis. On January 21, 2025, Tiffany finally received her new liver and the transplant was a success! GLORY TO GOD!
Fast forward to today, Tiffany is still in MUSC. Her liver is working great, but she is still on dialysis for her kidneys and they are watching those closely. With everything happening in her body, Tiffany is having to take therapy to learn how to not only walk again, but speech therapy as well because her speech and memory has been affected as well. Recently, she had to have another surgery because they found a hematoma on her wound that needed to be removed. While thoroughly reviewing her wound, they also found traces of mold so they are currently trying to determine where that is coming and what treatments are need for that. It will be at least a couple more weeks before she is released to the rehabilitation center.
Tiffany's doctor and caseworker advised her that she will need to be in the Charleston area for at least three months after she leaves rehab. Of course because of all of this, Tiffany is not able to work and because she is a cosmetologist and works for herself, she has no income coming in, no PTO, short term disability or anything of that nature. Her husband Eric has had to use all of his PTO/sick time from his job and is only allowed a few weeks of paid leave of absence, but he has no choice but to be there because of course he wants to support his wife, but with a transplant patient it's a requirement for someone to be there.
I am asking for donations to help their family with travel/moving expenses, medical bills, childcare, etc., during this difficult and trying time. Anything that you can sacrifice and give would be greatly appreciated and no amount is too small! God has already shown himself mighty in this situation, and I know that He will continue to keep her! You opening up your heart to give, will make you a part of this amazing testimony! Blessings to you all!
