Maria's Medical, Disability, Rehab

Our beloved Maria Ortiz Wuster was given a devastating diagnosis on May 20, 2021. A CT scan
revealed a brain tumor, and she was taken the next day into emergency brain surgery at Phelps Hospital
in
Sleepy Hollow, New York. After a nine-hour surgery, the surgeon believed he had removed the entire
tumor.
Maria seemed to be doing well, and on May 28 she was moved to the rehabilitation floor at
Phelps. Unfortunately, on June 1, she had a severe brain bleed, and was rushed into the operating room
for a second emergency brain surgery. The doctors were able to stop the bleed and stabilize her.
Maria has been diagnosed with a meningioma, which will require radiation therapy to begin in
about six months, to prevent regrowth of the tumor. Currently, she is still in intensive care. She remains
intubated and has had a brain fluid drainage tube installed to help drain fluid. Her numbers are
stabilizing and she has started to respond to commands, so we are all hopeful that her medical condition
will improve.
Maria is only 54 years old, and has worked in the human resources department of the U.S. Tennis
Association since 2007. Her husband Robert has been steadily by her side throughout this ordeal. Their
strong Christian faith has helped them to face these dark days. The Wusters attend Calvary Bible Church
in Yorktown Heights, and maintain a strong connection with the Community Bible Church in Valley
Cottage, New York

UPDATE: Maria had a third surgery on June 17, 2021 to do a tracheotomy, and give her a feeding tube. The surgery went well. Thankfully she's been breathing on her own since June 18th. She was transferred to a rehabilitation hospital in Newark, New Jersey on June 25th 2021. Maria has a long road to recovery ahead of her.
