Mother Nature can be a cruel mistress at times. She gives us such bounty, and occasionally takes it away. The past two Tuesdays, here at the James Ranch (www.jamesranch.net) we, along with our neighbors, have experienced devastating flash flooding coming from the 416 fire burn area. Although the fire caused stress, loss of business, and so much smoke, the firefighters kept the flames at bay and we experienced no physical damage. The flash floods washing ash, mud and debris down the burned hillsides are something no one can predict or stop.
Your support is greatly appreciated in helping 2 small businesses bear the burden of natural disaster.
James Ranch leases agricultural land to two lovely and vey hard-working women – Elaine Vidal of Mountain Belle Flower Farm and Heather Houke of Tilted Earth Farm.
The flooding that occurred on Tuesday, July 24th was devastating. The mud and debris flowed up to the elk fence surrounding the farm and then flattened it, unleashing a torrent that destroyed hoop houses and infrastructure including elk fencing and drip irrigation. Heather lost about half of her vegetables and Elaine lost nearly ALL of her flowers.
The flowers destroyed include many thousands of perennials, tubers, bulbs and represent a substantial financial loss. Heather had high hopes for Farmer’s Market and James Ranch Sales this summer. Elaine had numerous wholesale accounts with florists and wedding designers, in addition to multiple accounts for market bouquet sales including James Ranch Market. All of the weddings she was planning on providing flowers for had to be canceled.
While we are working diligently at cleanup efforts, what these ladies need right now is some financial support. We, at the James Ranch, are sponsoring this GoFundMe page to help raise funds to support these strong women in their efforts to recover. The money raised will go directly to them for replacement of infrastructure, perennials, and bulbs lost as well as seed money (yes in this case seed money means money for actual SEEDS) for next year.
