Save Alyce: Donate for Her Lifesaving Treatment
UPDATE 10/3: I want to thank everyone who has donated. Last night Alyce lost her battle with whatever medical crisis was happening. She fought so hard. All donations will be used to pay off her medical bills as well as pay for her cremation costs.
Hi, my name is Chalena, and if you know me, you know that I love my animals like they are my own children (as I currently cannot have children right now). Right now, I need your help. One of my cats is currently going through a medical crisis and I am swamped with trying to pay for her treatment and putting food on the table.
Who is this cat we speak of?
Now, if you have had the pleasure of speaking to me about animals, then you must know about the iconic miss "Alyce".
She is a beautiful silver tabby that looks like someone tried to breed a cat with an Aye Aye or a Lemur. Some say they she "stares into your soul" or that she "sees dead people". Quiet frankly, she might. I adore my spooky little girl with all my heart and I love her as much as the day I first met her.
Alyce's Story:
One day in 2017, one of my really close friends gave me a call, saying that they had found three feral kittens in the foundation pillars of their house. I had just started working as a veterinary assistant and jumped on the opprotunity to foster one of these babies as my "big girl job" allowed me to be able to afford this. My friend told me that 2 out of 3 of the kittens were almost untouchable but the third one seemed a little more tamed. She called that one "ginger". My mind changed from fostering to adopting as I have always wanted a male orange tabby - they were such a treat to see in clinic as they were normally angels. "That one is mine!" I told her. We scheduled to meet up the next day for pick up and can you believe that, none of them were orange? When she opened the box there were two little black kittens and what I can only describe as a grey piece of cotton that looked like someone picked them up out the seward. She looked the worst off of the three. Her eyes were closed shut and she had raspy breathing. I decided to pick that one as - she needed more TLC that I could provide at work and afford. With her being sick she was unlikely to get adopted compared to the other two.
Skip to a couple weeks later and this little kitten has opened her eyes and she is thriving! She no longer looks like a chewed piece of cotton but more like. . . .a gremlin.
"what the **** is that?" my dad's friends would say as they came into the house. "uh. . .a cat, i think" we would just respond. Regardless, my husband and I fell in love with her unique appearance and her spunky (very spicy) personality. Miss Alyce was the first animal we adopted together as a couple and has been there from the start of our relationship to now - 8 years later to where we are married and own our first house.
A Medical Crisis:
On September 28th she started isolating herself in the laundry room. While Alyce is a very independent cat and is not a fan of being held - she always comes out on the couch and sits next to us as we hangout as a family. At that moment, I knew something was wrong and called my boss and one of my veterinarian friends to let them know that I will be bringing her into work on Monday. Sunday night was even worse. She still kept isolating herself and I had set her on the couch to watch her. She did not move from that spot for more than 24 hours and had to be brought food and water. On Monday morning when I brought her in - she was alert and responsive but she wasn't being her typical "demon" self whenever it came to being in a hospital setting. We pulled her blood and come to find out that she was SEVERLY anemic. I ran her to the closest ER Clinic that night where I was quoted 3,000 - 5,000 dollars for a blood transfusion and diagnostics. Not only that - it seemed that she had found some sort of energy to fight the doctors and the vet techs and she would have had to been sedated for everything. The doctor and I were extremely concerned about fully sedating her because her red blood cell count was low - that she would not wake up after the sedation. We opted for outpatient diagnostics through my place of work and oral anti-biotics. The next day we set up doing radiographs and sending out a Feline Anemia PCR Panel (to find out why her body was destroying/not producing red blood cells) - she did fine that day but in the evening she started slipping away in my arms. She was almost lifeless as I held her and watched helplessly as she was almost in a comatose state. I immediatly called different ER's to get pricing for a blood transfusion and rushed her to the most afforable one.
Could I afford this? No. Did I find a way? Yes. Did I basically sell my soul to get a cash advance to save my cat? Absolutely. An APR of 249% is going to hurt me but it is never going to hurt me as much as watching her slip away in my arms.
I was able to get her blood transfusion and medications but she is not out of the woods yet. There is a chance that she may need another transfusion and ongoing after care as soon as we get that Anemia Panel back. I am not a begger. I am swallowing so much pride even asking for help right now, especially in this economy. But my house is not a home without my family and Alyce is part of that family. We are all worried sick about her.
So please, I beg you, every penny counts. You can donate a dollar, your prayers, or you can share this. I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank You,
Chalena and Alyce
