My four-year-old son Levi is a complicated little kid. He’s funny and sweet and has the best giggle you’ve ever heard. He loves music more than anything—dances around the room to Encanto or The Greatest Showman and is teaching himself to play the piano.
He is also a non-verbal child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a severe breathing disorder, and epilepsy with frequent seizures. Last month, I learned that he needs to be on oxygen and a BiPap machine in order to breathe at night. Since then, I have been battling with my insurance company to get them to cover the equipment that his doctors say is medically necessary. Insurance keeps rejecting my claims and the out-of-pocket costs keep climbing.
We were able to raise some money to buy him an adaptive bed. But we still need the BiPap machine, various accessories to use it, sleeping monitors, and some renovations to his room to accommodate the equipment. This is just to keep him breathing at night. To go to school or his doctors’ appointments safely, he also needs a special car seat and a stroller/wheelchair. Insurance has not agreed to pay for any of this and has already denied claims for some.
The costs keep adding up and time is running out. I am a teacher working three jobs to support a family of six. Levi’s routine medical care has already eaten through savings and credit. He’s been in intensive Applied Behavior Analysis for years and I have been applying for every grant I can find, but no one has been able to help me find an alternative to paying for all this myself. A charitable organization that helped us assess our budgetary situation said we are spending $5000 more each month than I take in.
We would be grateful for any amount that you can spare. Thank you for helping us keep our Levi alive.
