Our mom, Hyun Ji Kim, works six days a week as a waitress to provide for her three children Karis, Grace, and William.
On December 15, 2021, she had a car accident on her way to work and was taken to the emergency room. She got a CT scan done and it revealed unexpected swelling of lymph nodes all over her body. She was asked to make an appointment with an oncologist right away. After meeting with an oncologist, she has gotten a PET Scan and biopsy done. She has been diagnosed with stage 4 Carcinoma of Unknown and is now hospitalized at Fairfax Inova Hospital to start chemotherapy right away. The oncologist said that her condition has gotten significantly worse over the past 2 weeks and has to get treatment done as soon as possible as she gets other tests done and wait for those results. She has been in so much pain and can barely move or eat, putting her in no condition to work.
She, a single mom, hasn’t been able to earn money to pay for rent, utilities, and other living expenses since the accident. My sister and I are currently attending college at UVA and our brother is a senior in high school planning on starting his freshman year at Virginia Tech next fall. We are in urgent need of help paying bills, rent, tuition, and other unexpected expenses related to her treatment.

CT 촬영을 했는데 예상치 못한 림프절이 온몸에 부어오른 것이 드러났습니다. 엄마는 즉시 암 전문의와 약속을 잡으라고 요청받았습니다. 종양학자와 만난 후, 엄마는 PET 스캔과 조직검사를 받았습니다. 엄마는 ‘원발부위불명암’이라는 진단을 받고 현재 Fairfax Inova 병원에 입원해 바로 항암치료를 시작하려고 합니다. 암 전문의는 지난 2주 동안 상태가 크게 악화됐다며 다른 검사를 받는 대로 최대한 빨리 치료를 받고 결과를 기다려야 한다고 말했습니다. 엄마는 너무 많은 고통을 겪고 있고 거의 움직이지도 먹을 수도 없어 일은 더더욱 할 수 없는 상태 입니다.
엄마는 사고 이후 집세, 공과금, 그리고 다른 생활비를 낼 돈을 벌지 못하고 있습니다. 언니와 저는 현재 UVA에서 대학을 다니고 있고 저희 남동생 태빈이는 내년 가을에 Virginia Tech에서 1학년을 시작할 계획 입니다. 우리는 엄마의 치료와 관련된 청구서, 집세, 학비, 그리고 예상치 못한 비용들을 지불하는 데 도움이 시급합니다.
