My nephew, Jacob, is an Autistic child with MMR (Moderately Mentally Retarded). He is non-verbal, not fully potty trained and cognitively around 3-4 years old. Jacob has been raised by my mom, his Grandma Terri, since he was an infant. She has struggled to get all the things he has needed to be safe and happy.

Due to Jacob’s Autism and inability to speak he can get very frustrated. When he gets agitated, his reaction is to pound walls, floors, doors and himself. Terri and Jacob live in a mobile home which has walls made of drywall. As Jacob has gotten stronger he has torn down walls and has exposed wiring and ripped his bedroom door off. At school they have a room called a sensory room where the kids are place when they are out of control. It calms them down and gives them a safe place where if they need to continue to vent they can do so in a safe place for them and in a manner that doesn't affect everyone else.
Terri would like to build a room like this for Jacob; a room where he is safe and where his pounding won't be heard by neighbors. Without this room, Jacob has no way to vent and his negative behaviors will continue to escalate. At school, he knows that if he gets out of control, he will be sent to the sensory room. When Jacob was younger, Terri could send him to his room where he could safely express his frustration but now that Jacob is as big and strong as a man, he has destroyed the walls and bedroom door to the point that they no longer contain him and are so damaged that they may cause him harm.

Our family’s goal is to keep Jacob in the only home he has ever known. My mom has done everything in her power to prevent Jacob from becoming institutionalized. Taking care of a disabled child has prevented my mom, Terri, from being able to get a steady job because Jacob is often sick and must be sent home from school which most employers will not tolerate. Terri finds just enough money for Jacob’s day to day needs often at the expense of her own needs but a project like the safe room is just financially too far out of reach for their struggling household.
Jacob is a sweet loving boy who has been dealt a lot of bad cards, from parents that were unable to care for him to numerous mental and medical issues. Terri has worked for 20 years to make sure that Jacob has a fulfilling life and doesn't end up in a place where he isn't properly cared for. We are absolutely sure that Jacob would thrive in this safe environment that we wish to provide for him. We say in advance a special prayer of thanks to all those who are able to help contribute to Jacob’s Safe Room Fund.
Thank you!
