Anyone who has met my parents knows that they are kind, genuine people. They have spent their lives being the biggest cheerleaders for their children and grandchildren. I’ll never be able to count how many games, rehearsals, and late-night forgotten project runs to Wal Mart they have carted me to over the years, and always without complaint. No matter what, I could count on at least one (but usually both) of them to call my name from the stands or audience, and dry my tears after a tough loss or broken heart. While I will never truly be able to thank them enough for their selfless support, I would love to help them in their time of great need.
Unfortunately, it seems they have been buried in an avalanche of misfortune this year. Several months ago, my mother, a loyal Scana employee for 25+ years was given “early retirement” due to a merger. She planned to spend a some time after her release searching for new employment and enjoying her summer with her family. Sadly, things did not pan out this way.
About six months ago, my father began exhibiting some concerning symptoms with balance, memory, and overall physical ability. On July 18 (2 days before his birthday), he was admitted to the hospital due to disorientation. The diagnosis was a stroke and signs of dementia. He spent a month under hospital care before being released to a rehab facility for another 6 weeks. We are so thankful to have recently brought him home, where he will recover and continue to receive therapy.
As you can imagine, this has created an enormous burden for them emotionally, physically, and financially. My mother's severance reduced her income drastically and she needs to be available to care for my father, so full time work is difficult right now. Medical bills are piling up, and their air conditioning has also broken. My siblings and I are giving as much support as we can, but we are limited as well.
We are hoping to provide them with some prayers and encouragement from everyone. Also, if you feel led to assist them financially, it would be tremendously appreciated. We would love to provide them additional support for the cost of my dad's medical and therapy bills, transportation for him to appointments, and some relief for my mother so she can focus on finding a job that will work best for their new normal. Support in any form is so welcome, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read their story.
