Friday morning (Oct. 23, 2020) at about 12:00 am Kevin started to get violently ill.  He thought he had food poisoning.  His symptoms continued to worsen and at 5:30 am he agreed to go to the hospital.  As they were helping him to the car, he collapsed to the floor, so Sandy called for an ambulance.

The paramedic team arrived and found his blood sugars were astronomical and that is why he was so sick.  Kevin suffered his first heart attack en route to Unity Hospital. He was rerouted to Mercy Hospital where he crashed in the ER two more times.  He underwent a three-hour surgery where he had four stints put in and they tried to repair the damage to his heart.  Following the surgery, he was transferred to Abbott Northwestern Hospital where he was put in the ICU unit.

All of the doctors told Sandy there was no hope.  She was told that he wouldn't survive without a respirator or a heart pump. Due to all of the damage to his heart, he has been kept on the machines so his organs can rest. Tuesday afternoon Sandy was told that Kevin might be a candidate for an LVAD pump (left ventricular assist device). This has been the first glimmer of hope.

At this time Kevin continues to be in a medically induced coma.  He will squeeze Sandy's hand and his eye will twitch or blink when he listens to someone on the phone.  He is still hooked up to machines that help him breathe and pump his heart.  His other organs are working, which is great news.

The LVAD device can mean the difference between life and death for a person whose heart needs a rest after open-heart surgery or for people waiting for a heart transplant. LVADs are often called a "bridge to transplant."

Kevin will require long-term medical care and eventually a heart transplant.  As you can imagine, medical bills are already mounting.  If you would like to relieve some of their financial burden, any donation would be greatly appreciated. All funds raised will go directly to Kevin's medical expenses. On behalf of Sandy, Kevin and the kids,  we greatly appreciate the outpouring of love, prayers, and support over the past few days and undoubtedly in the months to come.
