For almost 80 years, American Legion Post 597, 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization located in Historic Downtown Carrollton, has prided itself on being an advocate for the local Veteran population, school children, and surrounding cities. Our post is an outlet for Veterans and their families to receive assistance with obtaining medical services, housing, benefits, basic needs, camaraderie and much more. We have raised money for various charities, including, but not limited to, Patriot Paws, One Tribe Foundation, Operation Purple Camp, CFB Giving House, and the Carrollton Firefighters Association. Each year, we adopt several underprivileged children from CFBISD and supply them with holiday gifts such as clothing and toys through our Christmas For Kids Program. We volunteer our time, raise funds, and gather donations for the Dallas VA Hospital. During the rolling blackouts and storm in February 2020, we were fortunate enough to maintain power and opened our doors to those needing a warm place to stay. This summer's rising heat lead us to open the post as a cooling station for the community. We hope to continue providing these valuable services and much more to our Veterans, members, and the surrounding cities.

Our building was erected in 1942 and is starting to show its age. This summer's drought was tough on the 80-year-old foundation. Subsequently, the floor has sagged 2.5 inches on the SW corner and 4 inches on the NW corner. The sub-floor and some of the joists are especially bad and in need of replacement. Several areas of the ceiling have sagging and damaged tiles. The restroom plumbing is old and outdated. Our members have volunteered their time and services towards minor improvements, and we have held fundraisers for repairs, but the cost of those repairs has far exceeded our abilities and the needs of the building. Without a building to house the donations and supply Veterans and local residents with a place they can visit and relax, we will almost certainly have to shut our doors. This would be devastating for our Veterans as well as the community.

Your generous donation will go towards repairing the foundation, laying down flooring, repairing the ceiling, and renovating the restrooms. Once these projects are accomplished, we can continue to provide these services and support to our Veterans, members, and the community.
