Did you know that #glaucoma is a leading cause of #pain and #blindness in #dogs? I didn’t- until March 18, 2016. My sweet #bassethound awakened that morning with watery eyes, elevated third eyelids, and cloudy pupils; I thought he was just having allergies. Unfortunately, it ended up being #glaucoma. This insidious #neurodegenerative disease results in elevated intraocular pressure, excruciating pain, and eventually leads to blindness.
After Grouper’s initial diagnosis, he underwent multiple surgical procedures to try to preserve his vision and alleviate the pain. He’s had needles placed in his eyeballs to relieve high pressures, removal of his right eyeball with placement of a prosthetic eye, and an emergency laser surgery to his left eye. He has adjusted well to being blind, however he continues to experience spikes of elevated intraocular pressure to his left eye. He had a particularly bad episode this week- and we are now left with the upsetting news that he needs one final surgery. This final surgery will cost $3386.00.
#EyeCareForAnimals has been absolutely fantastic during this entire devastating process, however my pet insurance (Nationwide) has not. I have now spent over $10,000 out of pocket in the attempt to keep Grouper healthy and pain free. I want to schedule the surgery as quickly as possible- I am managing his pain via a regimen of 4 different eye drops at multiple times a day, however the surgery is the only way to end the pain. Finding $3386.00 fast on a student budget is proving to be a challenge.
My #DroopyGrouper means the world to me. He is my baby, my best friend, and my heart. We’ve been together since he was tripping over his long ears at 2 months of age and he is now 10 years old. Despite his blindness, he remains an avid fan of walks, sniffing, and socializing. Someone asked me recently if he was a service dog- I replied “nope, I’m his service human.” He is such a gift to my life and I’m hoping that I can give him the gift of a pain free new year.
If you had intended to get me anything for Christmas this year, please instead consider a donation to help my sweet #DroopyGrouper receive his final surgery. Any amount is greatly appreciated.
