John Pestana needs a new liver. He’s in an advanced stage of liver disease. Right now he’s in the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, with his wife, Robbie. Luckily he’s second on the donor list. We know John is going to get a new liver and come back to us. This letter is about “What then?”
We can help relieve a deep anxiety this man has for his family. John Pestana has always provided for his family, Robbie and his son, Chad, and his daughter, Andrea, but this has taken a huge financial toll on them and will continue to do so.
Anyone who knows John Pestana knows that he loves life with a fervor few of us have. It’s not that he fears death. He doesn’t. He just exults in the life God gave him.
He feared death once, long ago, high on the side of a West Maui mountain where he was trapped on a ledge of a cliff.
He was young and foolish and he had climbed until he couldn’t climb anymore. He had reached a ledge only to find that the cliff above was too wet to go any further up – and too wet to go down. He was trapped on that ledge all day until he knew he could not last much longer. So John Pestana made a pact with God.
It was simple. He told God that if God let him live he would give his life to God. He doesn’t remember much more. Things became a blur. And then he found himself on the ground at the bottom of the cliff.
So John Pestana kept his promise. With joy. Because he never doubted that his life was a gift from God. And that joy, that zest for life, is infectious. It is so natural, so spontaneous, so much a part of the man himself that people feel good just being with him.
He does not think of it this way, but John’s love of God is his gift to others.
We wait and hope because we want him back with us. Can we do anything for him? Well, yes…we can pray, and then it’s up to God. Is there anything else?
