As you may already know, in July of 2018, Grayson Nicholas Platt decided to reveal his truth to the world and begin living an authentic life. And the truth is: it’s a boy!
So far, so good. Grayson began hormone replacement therapy, found a supportive social network, and is living life as a man at work, school, and home. Presenting socially as male involves more than developing a new sense of fashion - to flatten his chest, and prevent strangers from misgendering him, Grayson wears a chest compression vest, known as a binder. Binders are uncomfortable and dangerous if worn for long periods of time. Excessive binder use can lead to long-term back problems, trouble breathing, fractured ribs, and more. Unfortunately, not wearing a binder is not currently an option, and the demanding nature of his schedule means he often spends long days in discomfort. So now he’s ready for The Big Step: a double mastectomy, colloquially dubbed “top surgery” by the trans community. He has found a reputable surgeon in Ft. Lauderdale and will be travelling there for a week in the middle of June for the surgery and a series of appointments.
Fortunately, family has agreed to help with childcare during the procedure and recovery, and Grayson’s health insurance does provide some coverage for transition-related procedures. Unfortunately, he will still be responsible for a large part of the cost, to the tune of $7,000. As a full-time graduate student and breadwinner of his family, this is a significant financial burden.
Top surgery will be nothing short of life-changing for Grayson. This is such an important step in his transition and any financial assistance you can give will be deeply and forever appreciated.
