My name is Luis Canseco-Lopez, and I will be a freshman at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia for my undergraduate in Criminology B.S as a first-generation student. I was set for my freshman year, having all the funds needed to graduate college in 4-years with little to no debt. However, in March 2020, Covid-19 forced my family and me in our homes. 3 weeks later, my dad and mom lost their job due to several of their work colleagues were infected with the virus. As money was starting to run out, I helped my parents by forfeiting most of my college funds by paying bills, food essentials, and other necessities. Unfortunately, by June 2020 I nearly lost most of my college savings helping my parents get back on their feet. Thankfully, my parents were able to find new jobs and are now helping me with my college funds. The damage, however, is almost irreversible as I am back to square one raising funds for college. In high school, I attended Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School, a prestigious STEM focus school ranked #8 Best Public School in the nation and with a low acceptance rate of 16%. I was accepted into 9 out of 10 schools I applied, all with scholarships and grants. I choose George Mason given its Criminology program is ranked #11 in the nation and is 15 minutes by metro to D.C. For my first year, I need $5,000 to help pay for my first year but I am only asking for $2,500 as I am confident I would be able to gain scholarships from my university and grants. I used most of my time contacting the school's financial aid office and from family members to help me with my funds. Time is running out. At this point, even $1 would help me get a step closer to completing my dream of becoming the first person in my family to attend college. Anything would help. Gracias por suy ayuda.
