My friend Joni Compretta was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer on August 28, 2015.  The 39 year old mother of twins is no stranger to doctors or hospitals because she is an RN. However, nothing could have prepared her for the words “you have cancer”.

There is no ‘good’ type of breast cancer and to the patients that hear it – the phrase “triple negative” carries a heavy weight. The disease is notorious for having a poorer survival rate because it is aggressive and is less understood than other types of breast cancer.

 After a double mastectomy, she underwent 16 rounds of aggressive chemotherapy to try and stop the breast cancer from coming back. At the completion of the chemo, Joni had a CT done  to be sure her chest, abdomen and pelvic area were clear of cancer, only to find a suspicious spot on her right kidney. Her Nephrologist said that 90% of these types of masses are cancerous and therefore has to be surgically removed and is scheduled for April 14th, 2016.

Joni still has a few more surgeries to undergo in the near future as far as reconstruction. She has a very positive outlook, and is a fighter. However, the medical bills are starting to pile up and with having to miss so much work; it has put quite a strain on her and her husband Rob.
