Nick died on December 30, 2017, of an accidental drug overdose, just 3 days shy of his 24th birthday.
He was smart, silly, fun, creative, loyal, protective, handsome, charismatic, a natural leader, conversational, artistic, a deep thinker, athletic and strong. Nick didn't often see himself as the amazing person who we saw. He struggled with depression and anxiety and addiction.
All of this made him a beautiful, complicated human. An extraordinary human. A good, good, good person. Knowing and loving him is a gift that cannot be taken away.
For those of you wishing to donate in Nick's memory, Kathryn and I are pleased to let you know that the Nick Durkin Scholarship Fund has been established with the Birmingham Foundation.
Your donations will go towards scholarships awarded to City Charter High School students participating in the annual Costa Rica service trip. Students are expected to pay for a portion of the trip costs, and this scholarship is intended to alleviate the financial hardship any student may have.
Students making this trip work hard in the service of those in need in Costa Rica, learn about the Costa Rican government, culture and ecology, and get some fun time in a beautiful setting. They return home with an appreciation for ecology and economy and a deeper understanding of themselves and their role in the world.
Nick had the privilege of making this trip when he was a senior at CCHS, and it had a lasting impact on him. He often spoke of returning to Costa Rica to work there.
