About a month ago, I walked for the last time and collapsed on the floor outside my apartment. My mom planned to take me to a doctor’s appointment to follow up about some muscle pain and weakness all over my body and neuropathy in my feet that had worsened severely and quickly. Instead, I was assisted into the ambulance by the fire department and admitted to the hospital for the second time that week, where I stayed for 14 days before I was finally diagnosed with acute viral myositis. Essentially, my body had an autoimmune response to the flu that caused my muscles to become inflamed, painful, and so weak that I lost the ability to walk. I’ve been transferred to a rehabilitation center where I’m focused on physical and occupational therapy that will get me walking and independent again. Although my neuropathy has worsened, my muscles have grown stronger and I am currently able to walk about 40 feet with a walker! I am making progress every day and working hard to ensure a return to a safe, accessible, comfortable home. Of course, I am unable to work at this time and I’m anticipating massive costs. Thankfully my insurance covers the cost of the rehabilitation center, however, there are expenses from my two week stay at the hospital. Additionally, I will need to cover the costs of various accessibility tools as my journey of healing will continue even after I return home from the rehabilitation center.
