Joey And Bat Sanctuary

JABS is a small sanctuary and is a not for profit and almost entirely self funded. With the current climate and the ever increasing need for the sanctuary to expand its intake, your help is needed
now more than ever- every little bit makes a difference.
Run by Julie Malherbe, JABS sees countless orphans and injured animals that include joeys (kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, koalas, possums and other natives), bats, birds and more.
Julie has been a rescuer/transporter since early 2012 and was inspired by others in the Wildlife Rescue network along the way to open JABS . She became a foster carer under an amazing shelter that allowed her to grow and develop as a carer and, taking the next step, to became a registered shelter with DELWP in June 2014.
Julie's tireless work sees hundreds of lives saved each year but with looming and increasing costs, her sanctuary is under more financial strain each year.
Some of the suppliers used by JABS for their life saving work are:
Not Just for Natives (milk/formula),
Burston Blue (teats),
Wombaroo (milk/formula).

Basic costs for care (costed by JABS):
Age Range : 18 - 26 weeks (0.4 formula) = average about $5 per joey per week
Age Range : 26 - 30 weeks (0.6 formula) = average about $6 per joey per week
Age Range : 30 - 40 weeks (0.7 formula) = average about $7 per joey per week - assuming transfer to second stage at about 4kg or 40 weeks - if not, then the average increases = up till 46 weeks, where the weekly cost peaks at about $11 per joey per week.
After that age, Julie will start weening them off milk. However, the cost of oaten hay and pellets comes in to the mix from about 35 weeks. From about 35 weeks of age, a bag of oaten hay per week adds about $15 per week.
(Not yet included, adding $5 for a teat because it usually lasts longer than 1 joey, but it's still a real cost.)
Tissues = about $1 per box - which will last for maximum 1 day with the 8 joeys - so that's about 12c per joey per day = about $1.75 per joey per week.
Electricity for the joeys is about $100 per month (washer and dryer), water is about $20 per month and gas is about $20 per month. The amount of washing mostly changes based on the age of the joeys, with more cleaning costs for smaller joeys.
With 8 Joeys in care, estimates are about $58 per week for milk formula and about $35 per week for electricity, water and gas and $7 per week for tissues.
Total (for the 8 joeys) = about $95 per week = about $12 per joey per week or, about $415 per month, if we consider the 4 bigger kids that we had 2 weeks ago, JABS was at about $830 per month
(including 1 bag oaten hay per week).
The cost of a baby bat is the same as the 35 week Joey and that is from day 3 to week 6 then it increases as they need fruit and High Protein Powder.

Other supplies used are:
Fresh Fruit, meal worms, chaff,
Saline solution, vet wrap, solsolite, tegaderm, Nilstat, Daktarin, Colic Drops,
Bentonite Clay, Slippery Elm, Vit C, Vit E

Currently, we have 8 bat pups, an echidna and two joeys- to give you an idea of current costs, we need vet services, ventolin for our nebuliser, we run a humidicrib 24/7 and cut fruit all day (and night).
With heat expected, our numbers of animals in care will swell, we may become an evacuation point for other shelters (as we did last summer) and a way point for rescuers to triage bats.

With the looming fire season, conservative estimates show that yearly operating costs will jump from $7,000 to at least $10,000.
