Send Heidi to Costa Rica to present research!

Hi, friends!

My Washtenaw Safe Passage + regional overview abstract has been accepted to be presented at the Neotropical Ornithology Conference this July! Due to the time crunch, I'm hoping to fundraise enough to at least cover travel and registration fees, which will easily top $1,500 with any excess going towards Safe Passage efforts (Just Save Birds  helps support WSP and Detroit Safe Passage - a research branch of Detroit Audubon ). Please share as you see fit! This is local data with global consequences - and I can't thank y'all enough for your moral support since 2016 on a very challenging project. <3

More about this project:
In 2016, the first full year that Washtenaw Safe Passage (WSP)  acquired data in Ypsilanti, over 25 species of birds were documented striking windows. They were largely neotropical migrants. With additional regional studies supporting those trends (over 45 species since then, 3/4 being neotropical migrants), it's imperative to look at window collisions beyond Midwestern regional impacts. Full title of this paper: Summary of Neotropic Migrants Impacted by Low-rise Non-residential Buildings in Michigan.

Given the importance of this issue, I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to present the paper to a highly focused group of researchers and share what we have learned through WSP work so they are able to better understand our impacts on Neotropical birds. A perk of this conference is further collaboration with colleagues in Central and South America. The ultimate goal is to prevent collisions everywhere in their migratory path, breeding, and wintering grounds. WSP's research fills a niche that until recently was relatively under studied: it is three season data from non-residential low-rise buildings. The bulk of North American research focuses on high-rise buildings during migration, academic campus low-rise buildings during migration, and residences. With additional seasons of work in the region (outside of WSP, but under my permits and protocol) since the first draft of this paper came out, we have a much more complete picture of summer collisions by neotropical migrants that otherwise go undetected because they fall outside of the expected migration periods (eg, Yellow Warblers, Gray Catbirds, and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in July).

More about my work:
Providing ongoing support to Washtenaw and Detroit Safe Passage programs and advising new monitoring projects nationally and internationally. Advocating for bird safe glass and window collision prevention through research, community building, and media coverage (including film documentaries, print, radio, and social media). Effecting change through direct collaborations with the glass industry, architects, researchers, zoos, and environmental organizations to reduce bird mortality through monitoring, public education, and implementing custom prevention solutions. Currently freelance consulting on window collision prevention.
