My name is Brie Bresser and I am a friend of Justin and Lynsey's (Justin's fiance). This couple is to wed on May 16th, 2015! What a tragedy to have a motor vehicle accident right before their wedding, it's everyone's worst nightmare. We (Lynsey, their families and friends) are very blessed and thanking GOD every day that Justin is here with us! Please read their story and if you find it in your heart to donate, please do so in order to help with unexpected medical costs, as he has a very long recovery a head! Justin's inability to work at this time and it is unclear as to when he will be able to resume work. UPS, is a great company to work for, however they do not have sick leave and short term disability has not yet been determined. Also this couple needs to have the ability to financially and physically still pull this wedding off - because this couple is GETTING MARRIED, no matter what!!!
Wednesday, March 11th Justin was heading to work at UPS in Mason City, Iowa. Justin, his fiancé and his little boy live in St. Ansgar, Iowa. It was roughly 9:20 when Lynsey, received a call at her work that Justin was just in a serious car accident. The Jaws of Life were needed to remove Justin from the vehicle which took slightly over an hour. He was then taken to Mercy hospital. That day was a long day for everyone as Justin was in the trauma ER room for hours as he was evaluated and medical staff looked to the next steps. There were many scans, blood draws, and the day ended with a 4 hour surgery. His left femur was broken in 3 places shattering each bone. A rod was placed through his knee to reconstruct the bones of the femur with cables placed around them holding all the bones in place. He was hospitalized for 5 days with many ups and downs during the stay. He experienced dizziness for which they continued to draw blood as he had lost a large amount during surgery. The hemoglobin counts remained low; thus he received a blood transfusion. This appeared to work wonders for a couple days. As days passed he seemed to be gaining strength and energy slowly and was discharged on that Sunday. He would finally go home with the restriction of no weight baring to his left leg for a minimum of 8 weeks.
The car ride home was very traumatic for Justin as he could feel every bump, line and rail road track in his leg, what was a 30 minute drive home seemed like 20 hours to him. Finally home, he was so exhausted and dizzy that all he could do was lay in bed. From here things went from bad to worse. The next couple days he would set goals to try and get himself up so that he could start to gain strength; however he was never able to accomplish this. It was Tuesday night, when he had use the bathroom and he had no option but to make it to the bathroom. He was very dizzy, short of breath and losing color quickly, Lynsey knew at that moment, something was wrong.
Justin and Lynsey have an in home health care nurse that helps out with all the incision care and personal care for him. Lynsey called her that night after barely getting Justin back in bed and the nurse indicated that doctors wanted to see him in the ER after describing everything that was going on. Wednesday morning, March 18th (exactly 1 week later) a trek back to the ER was made. Justin was losing color and his pain was extreme. Once in the ER, levels were checked and he was low on calcium and again low hemoglobin counts. Another blood transfusion and calcium pills were administered. The decision was made to keep him for observation to monitor him over night and see what the next steps would be. That night, Justin, Lynsey and the nurse team talked about options and felt it was not safe to go home with how unstable he was. A rehab unit was discussed to help him gain strength and learn how to manage pain. Thursday, March 19th Justin was again experiencing lots of dizziness where his medical team determined that they needed to look further into this situation. They were more tests, ultra sounds, x-rays, and lots of blood drawn. He would be staying hospitalized until this could be resolved. He was given additional blood transfusions and rather than the hemoglobin counts rising, they would drop. The doctors thought there was possibly internal bleeding. A CT scan was then performed and it was now found that there was yet another break in his femur. This one up by his hip socket, yet still on his femur. Doctors thought that could be causing causing small bleeds internally.
Next stop was another surgery. Friday morning it was anticipated that surgery would be performed. However, when the orthopedic surgeon came in to update, he determined that he would like more x-rays of the left foot that was red, swollen, and hurt to touch. The results indicated, now a fractured foot as well. The surgery was pushed back to Saturday morning. This surgery consisted of placing 3 screws to the left head femur. A walking shoe was given to Justin to protect the left foot. Since he is unable to bear weight it was determined the shoe would work versus a cast. He came out of surgery great and in a day he was feeling better than ever!
Justin was still weak and not moving well and the next place of residency would be rehab. In rehab the goal was to gain strength and learn to become independently mobile. Between the hospital stay and rehab he finally returned home on Friday, March 27. Since being home, home health comes to check on all his incisions and wounds. It is Justin’s hope that PT can start soon, however this is up to the doctors. Future doctor visits will determine the healing process and determine if more surgeries will be needed.
Justin and Lynsey are hoping the worst is past and that they can start moving forward. He has a goal to walk his new bride back down the aisle after their ceremony on May 16th.
Please help me in raising money for this couple - they've had too many setbacks already and on behalf of their families and friends - we don't want any more stressors on them!
