I have bipolar disorder, type two, with treatment-resistant depression. This means that medications have not been able to treat my illness well. ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) is a procedure used to treat this type of depression as well as my worsening hypomania. I am hoping to have this procedure done immediately and raise the funds for transportation and to have my partner at my side during this 6-week process.
ECT uses small electric currents passed through the brain, intentionally triggering a brief seizure in order to quickly change brain chemistry, hopefully reversing some symptoms of mental health conditions such as my own.
My depression is worsening and my hypomanic episodes have become dissociative. If any of you know me you know it has been a rough year. I've been inpatient in mental health wards 4 times over the last 8 years of my life. I am struggling to believe that I am capable of anything other than withstanding pain. I don't know how I can be a successful human, let alone a partner or parent with the symptoms of this disorder at this point. I feel desperate to do anything I can to be better and prevent this illness from chipping away at me any longer.
I am in so much pain and I want to be here for my daughter and husband. I want to fight for my mental health and my life.
The Clevland Clinic has evaluated me in the last few months and said I can start treatment immediately. The roadblock I am running into is that to have this procedure done, they will not allow you to drive yourself, take a bus, rideshare, or uber due to the use of general anesthesia and the position that leaves the patient in, so you have to have someone who knows you or medical transport deliver you. Cleveland is an hour away from where we live and to be treated I have to be at the hospital 3 times a week from 6am-12pm for 6 weeks.
I am asking for funds to help allow someone I know to transport me to the Hospital three times a week for 6 weeks and wait with me while the procedure is done.
