Justin Hughes' journey started last May with a lot of pain on his right flank, after that he went to the emergency room because he had hematuria ( blood urine). After some studies, showed up a mass in his right kidney. Doctors decided to removed the kidney and they discovered that the tumor was cancerous, they gave us a diagnosis of Collecting duct carcinoma (CDC) of the kidney is a rare but aggressive type of RCC (renal cell carcinoma) 1-3% of all kidney cancers with presumed origin from Bellini’s collecting ducts.

Treatment options are surgery, chemotherapy , some cases radiation and different types of trials.

Due to the diagnosis we were referred to MD Anderson in Houston, where since last year they have not assured us that it really is that type of kidney Cancer and for the same reason they cannot offer us a treatment other than surgery.

His studies have been shared all over the world hoping that doctors, specialists and pathologists can help to determine a diagnosis.

Two months after the nephrectomy they removed 32 lymph nodes and all the Cancer that was in them.

After 8 months the cancer returned in the same way what was in the kidney tumor

and I came back in a tumor in the liver.

Given the rarity, doctors from MD Anderson and from other parts of the world are still unable to tell us exactly what type of Cancer it is, however, as the Cancer continues to grow, oncologists recommend treating it as Collecting duct carcinoma with some type of systemic treatment such as chemotherapy. But because they can't really verify the type of cancer Justin has chosen to do stem cell and oxygen treatment which isn't FDA approved so insurance doesn't cover it. He has already received 100 million stem cells and his wife, Berphy, administers oxygen meds through a port that was surgically placed into Justin.
