Justin's Bard & Curtis Fundraiser

Dear friends and family,

I am honored to have been invited to participate in the Young Artist Summer Program at Curtis Summerfest before beginning my graduate studies at Bard College Conservatory of Music this Fall.

As a first-generation University student in my family, I am coming from a very low/limited income household (200% of the poverty level)—the idea of pursuing my graduate studies in New York and attending a summer program at one of the most prestigious music institutions in the world is a dream!

As I begin this new chapter, I have significant and daunting financial barriers ahead of me, and at the recommendation of my friends, I have decided to reach out to this community of friends and family for help.

1. CURTIS SUMMERFEST
The Curtis Institute of Music is one of the most renowned and prestigious music schools in the world, and after auditioning I was thrilled to be accepted into their summer music program and offered a partial scholarship. This three-week intensive program gives accepted students daily courses in musical studies, weekly private lessons, chamber music and orchestra rehearsals, sectional coachings, all-program choir, presentations, lectures, and masterclass with the legendary faculty of Curtis.

Cost of Attendance for Summer 2018
Application Fee: $65
Tuition: $3,500
Housing and Dining: $2,650
Airfare: $664
(Credit) Partial Scholarship: -$4071
Total Cost (after aid): $2,808

2. BARD COLLEGE CONSERVATORY

I am extremely honored to have been accepted at the Bard College Conservatory of Music  in Upstate New York. I was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to attend; however, the remaining costs (housing, fees, transportation, books and supplies, and other moving-related expenses) exceed $20,000 for one year of attendance. If you add the income from my mom and my two part-time jobs, the remaining expenses after my scholarship are well over half of our combined annual household income.

Cost of Attendance for Fall 2018
Estimate Books & Supplies: $300.00
Fees: $3,190.00
Estimate for Utilities: $3,500.00
Estimate for Housing: $12,000.00
Estimate for Moving to NY: $1,500.00
Tuition: $37,626.00
(Credit): Tuition Scholarship: -$37,626.00
Total Cost (after aid): $20,490

FINANCIAL GOAL
As outlined above, the total cost of my expenses between these two programs is $23,298. I set my GoFundMe goal at $12,000—roughly half of my overall expenses that I am facing this year.

While I will inevitably have to take out some loans and may have some work opportunities in New York, a head start with these initial investments would have a HUGE impact and I would be so grateful for your help (even $5 donations add up).

I know that some friends have mentioned making contributions in lieu of a graduation gift—here is your chance to do so!

ABOUT ME
My name is Justin Morgan, and I'm a double bassist in the Greater Salt Lake area. Having almost completed my Bachelor's degree (the last of my coursework will end in June), I spent much of my last semester taking auditions for graduate programs around the country. I was honored to have earned acceptance into 4 out of the 5 schools that I applied to (University of Utah, University of North Texas, Boston Conservatory, and New England Conservatory) and received invitations to two schools that I did not officially apply to (University of Kentucky and Bard College Conservatory). I was honored to receive partial and/or full scholarships to all of these institutions.

My passion for performance is equalled by my passion for music education and arts administration. I am honored to work at the Gifted Music School, a local 501(c)3 non-profit children's music school in Salt Lake City, as an Assistant Conductor and Executive Assistant. While my administrative work is compensated, all of my artistic work for the school is completely volunteer time. My four years of working with the students and faculty at the Gifted Music School have been incredibly rewarding to me musically and personally.

In addition to working at Gifted Music School and going to school full-time, I also work as a music librarian and perform regularly with orchestras throughout the valley. When I'm not studying, working, or rehearsing, I also enjoy volunteering on my school's Student Advisory Committee. My experiences at the University of Utah and in Salt Lake City have been varied and diverse, helping me gain skills as a bassist, conductor, arts administrator, music librarian, graphic designer, and teacher. I am very blessed by the opportunities that I have been given and I am excited to begin a new chapter in New York this Fall.

Will you help me get there?

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration :-)
