My name is Marilyn Hayward. In August of 2021, my son Danny was taken to the Edmonton Remand Centre for an unpaid fine. In Alberta, they have a system called "Pay or Stay". Danny had to stay the night because I did not have the money. The family came up with the money the next day. The day Danny was killed. The fine was paid. While he was being lined up to be released, guards assaulted him - they claimed he became "confrontational" (he was being released; why would he jeopardize that?!). We later learned from an eyewitness who came forward that Danny was not confrontational. Rather, Danny was talking to the witness and trying to help him.

Danny was beaten, handcuffed, pepper-sprayed and beaten some more until going into cardiac arrest. They took him to the hospital after getting his heart started. I wasn't informed of Danny's whereabouts after the fine was paid until contacted by the hospital (about one day later). I was told Danny had been dead for over 20 minutes before getting a heartbeat. I flew to Edmonton from Ontario the next day. I knew I was going to say goodbye to my oldest son. The doctors gave the family no hope of any recovery, so he was taken off life support, with his son, myself and his two younger brothers present.

The remand centre stonewalled the family from any real answers or gave brief, conflicting stories of the incident. After many months, doctors, medical staff and witnesses gave some answers. We are seeking more answers and justice against the system that is supposed to protect people in their custody. We need all the help and support we can get for Danny's murder. I will be travelling back and forth to Edmonton from Ontario to try to fight for justice and answers; I need all the financial support I can get.
