On May 19, 2026, my world was destroyed. My son, Giovanni Martinez Jr., age 24, was brutally taken from us in an act of violence that no family should ever have to endure. Giovanni was more than my firstborn son. He was funny, loving, loyal, protective, athletic, and the kind of person who showed up for the people he loved without hesitation. He loved music, basketball, baseball, cars, and making people laugh. He had a big heart and a fierce spirit.

That protective nature is exactly how he lost his life. Giovanni died defending his mother after she was attacked by his half brother. He stepped in to protect someone he loved — and paid for it with his life. No parent is prepared for a phone call like this. No father should have to plan the funeral of his 24-year-old son.

We are asking for help because our family is facing overwhelming emotional and financial burdens during the most devastating period of our lives. Funds raised will go toward funeral and burial expenses, memorial services to properly honor Giovanni's life, travel costs for family returning home and handling arrangements, family support during this unimaginable tragedy, and justice-related expenses and advocacy efforts as we continue fighting for accountability after the offender was released and is not currently facing the charges we believe this case deserves.
