March 22 update: Portions of the donations are now also going to gas money for commuters. There is also an additional update below this description section!
Operation Metro Surge in the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs has left millions of dollars of destruction in its wake. One component of this destruction is the lasting legal fees and stress for protesters who were detained by ICE agents and charged with crimes- often 18 USC 111.
Judges are becoming increasingly frustrated with the mistruths told by DHS in court, and most cases that have gone to court so far, including in Los Angeles and Chicago, have been dropped.
The stress of facing criminal charges is immeasurable, but having a dedicated lawyer can help. Pro bono lawyers are incredibly maxed out right now, and as such, many protesters may not be able to access pro bono services. And if these protesters also cannot afford to pay for a lawyer, they are left without a safety net, or forced to go into debt to pay for a lawyer.
The goal of this fundraiser is to cover the legal fees of at least 20 protesters. Thank you for your generosity and for supporting We The People!
