Justice for Unko Alofa

Donation protected
Aloha,
On July 19, 2022, our 70-year old father Alofaaga Togiai was physically assaulted during a road rage incident at Lai’e Point, Hawaii by a 28-year-old man named Daniel Reid Aikua, aka Ha’a Aikau.

Following the incident, my father immediately filed a police report with the Honolulu Police Department. Almost a week had passed, and still, no progress had been made with his report. Our family and friends decided to do our own investigating for witnesses and security footage from homes where the incident occurred. We were able to obtain home security video footage of the entire encounter.

Due to this incredible source of evidence, we were able to match the assaulter’s vehicle to the suspect's mother. Given this information and video footage, our father was able to identify his assaulter as Ha’a Aikau. Our family immediately took this information to the Honolulu Police Department and the Honolulu Prosecutor’s office.

Despite the home security footage, the ability to identify the vehicle and the assaulter we provided to the Honolulu Prosecutor's office under Prosecutor Steven Alm ruled that there was not enough evidence. Our family was shocked that Steve Alm and the prosecutors’ office still did not think that was enough evidence. Under Hawaii State law, “A person is strictly liable with respect to the attendant circumstance that the person who sustains substantial bodily injury was sixty years of age or older. This incident is an assault in the first degree and is a class B felony. Ha’a Aikau has an extensive criminal record and should be behind bars.

Our family took to social media to express our frustration with how our father’s case was dismissed and to seek justice for his assault. Due to the news coverage and phone calls to the State Prosecutor's office, our father’s case has been reopened. We are grateful that we did our own investigating and found home security video surveillance of our father’s incident. Otherwise, there would be no evidence or identification of the vehicle and suspect that physically assaulted our father.

It has become clear that we must advocate for our father and that we will need to hire a lawyer to seek justice. We did not want any attention. We just lost our mother, my dad's sweetheart, less than a month before he was assaulted. We ask for your help by donating any amount to support our legal fees. At the same time, we fight to seek justice for our father, grandfather and great grandfather Alofaaga Togiai or, as many know him, “Unko Alofa.” Thank you so much for your love and support
