The purpose of this fundraiser is to bring awareness to the systemic racism that takes place at Southwest Minnesota State University and bring justice for a young man with a promising future. The family has asked to keep the student’s name anonymous due to safety concerns. On 10/13/2024 a young African American student (K) was attacked by a Caucasian student(G) in which he mentored. K had mentored G over the summer, and they quickly became friends. During the night in question a group of students were in the lobby of the dorm rooms celebrating homecoming weekend. K noticed G arguing with another friend and stepped in to try to deescalate the argument. G, was extremely intoxicated and began yelling and swearing at K. They began to argue, and another student stepped in and restrained K. At this moment G viciously attacked K. When the police arrived, K told the police that he wanted to press charges on G, however no charges were filed on K’s behalf. Since this incident, the school has kicked K off the football team and placed him on academic probation. The school has also been working alongside of the police and as a result K is the one facing felony and misdemeanor charges. The entire school held K accountable simply because he was a mentor to G. This terrible situation has K’s future on the line. K has never been in any altercations, nor has he ever had any legal troubles. He is very remorseful for the situation but should not be the only student held accountable. G has been treated as the victim even with video evidence that shows he initiated the entire altercation. G, his brother and friends have been threatening and harassing K since the incident, even though G filed a restraining order against K. The school and police have done nothing about the threats nor harassment. We are asking for help to raise money for K’s lawyer fees. He is scheduled for his first court appearance on 12/11/2024. Every and any donation will go directly to paying the attorney and is greatly appreciated.
