I am creating this fundraiser because my husband is currently on Florida’s death row for a crime he did not commit, and we are fighting every single day to bring awareness to his wrongful conviction and seek the justice he deserves.

For the past 9 years, Johnathan has been fighting to prove his innocence and get justice for what happened in his case.

In 2016, Johnathan was arrested after police showed a photo of him to the State’s only alleged eyewitness while the witness was in the hospital. That eyewitness later became the ONLY direct evidence the State had against him. During trial, prosecutors themselves admitted that without this witness, they did not have a case.

There was no DNA, fingerprints, weapon, video footage, or phone records linking him to the crime, only the testimony of that one witness.

After Johnathan was convicted, that same eyewitness later went to the prosecutor’s office and admitted he never actually saw him at the scene, explaining he was shown a photo while in the hospital. His recantation was so significant that charges against one of Johnathan’s co-defendants were dropped.

Yet despite this, my husband remains on death row.

Living through this has been devastating, not only for Johnathan, but for our entire family. This case has taken an emotional toll on all of us.

Johnathan is not just a case number or a headline to me. He is my husband, my best friend, and the person I love for the sake of God. To our family he is a devoted son, a caring brother, a loyal friend, and a much loved uncle. He is someone whose life means so much to the people who know and love him.

It has also been incredibly painful to watch him be portrayed in headlines and media as someone he is not. The version of him that is spoken about publicly does not reflect the man he is.

Even through everything, he continues to hold onto his faith and his hope that truth and justice will prevail. While on death row, he has also dedicated himself to writing and helping others.

As his wife, it is painful knowing he has spent nearly a decade fighting for his freedom while still having to endure this injustice.

Right now, Johnathan has a state-appointed attorney, but we are raising funds to hire a private attorney who will fully fight for his life, properly investigate his case, and give him the strongest chance at justice.

This fundraiser will help cover legal fees, investigative work, case-related costs, and efforts to continue bringing awareness to his wrongful conviction.
