Justice for Joel Sousa: Help Us Find Answers & Honour Him
Only 18. He went to hospital for help and never came home.
Imagine being a mother who takes her son to hospital because he needs help, believing that he is somewhere safe and receiving the care he needs.
You trust the people looking after him. You hope he will get better. You expect him to come home.
But instead, you receive the devastating news that your son has lost his life.
This is the heartbreaking reality our family is facing following the loss of our beloved Joel Sousa, who was just 18 years old.
On 16 October 2026, Joel tragically died following a road traffic collision on the Orwell Bridge in Ipswich, after leaving a hospital ward where he had been receiving medical care.
We are sharing his story because we want people to know who Joel was, understand what happened and help our family find the answers we desperately need.
Who was Joel?
Joel was a gentle, quiet and respectful young man who enjoyed his own space, listening to music and playing video games.
He was naturally reserved, but those who knew him understood how kind-hearted he was. He wasn't someone who caused trouble or sought attention. He was simply a young man trying to find his way in life.
Joel had experienced bullying and struggled with his mental health. He often kept his feelings to himself because he didn't want his family to worry.
He was a much-loved son, brother, godson, cousin and friend, with his whole future still ahead of him.
And like any family, all we ever wanted was for him to be happy, healthy and safe.
What happened to Joel?
In the days leading up to his death, Joel had been struggling with his mental health and experiencing serious difficulties sleeping.
His family sought professional help because they wanted him to receive the care and treatment he needed.
Joel was receiving care on Poppy Ward, an inpatient mental health ward. On 15 October 2026, doctors became concerned that some of his symptoms could be linked to a neurological condition, including possible seizures and inflammation of the brain.
He was transferred to Brantham Ward at Ipswich Hospital for further assessment and specialist treatment, arriving at approximately 6:30pm.
According to a written explanation provided to our family by Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT), at around 3:20am on 16 October, Joel became increasingly agitated, pacing and talking to himself.
The Trust says security was called, but before security personnel arrived, Joel forced open a door and left the ward.
A member of staff reportedly followed him but lost sight of him.
The hospital states that police were contacted at approximately 3:32am to report Joel missing.
Just nine minutes later, at 3:41am, Suffolk Constabulary received a report from the ambulance service concerning a person on the westbound carriageway of the Orwell Bridge.
A fatal collision had occurred.
Our beloved Joel had lost his life.
He was only 18.
A mother's desperate search for her son
There is something about that morning that makes this tragedy even harder for our family to comprehend.
Joel's mother has told us that as soon as the hospital contacted her to say her son had gone missing, she immediately left home to search for him.
Like any mother, she was frightened and desperate to find her child.
But while searching for Joel, she became caught in heavy traffic.
The Orwell Bridge had been closed following a fatal collision, causing widespread delays across Ipswich.
What she didn't know was that the collision behind those delays involved the very son she was desperately trying to find.
She was out looking for her boy, not knowing that he had already lost his life.
We cannot begin to describe what that moment means to his mother or the pain she continues to carry.
She had trusted the hospital to care for her son. She believed he was somewhere he could receive help and recover.
Instead, she is now having to prepare his funeral.
Our family deserves answers
We are still struggling to understand how Joel was able to leave the hospital while experiencing such serious health difficulties.
What safeguards were in place to protect him? Was he receiving the appropriate level of supervision? Were the risks associated with his mental health and possible neurological condition properly assessed?
And most importantly, could something have been done differently that might have prevented his death?
The hospital has provided an initial explanation, but we still have important unanswered questions.
We are not claiming that negligence has already been established. We simply want the truth, a thorough examination of what happened and accountability if failures are identified.
There has also been speculation suggesting that Joel deliberately took his own life.
We ask people not to make assumptions. Struggling with mental health does not automatically mean someone intended to end their life, and the full circumstances surrounding Joel's final moments have not yet been established.
Joel deserves to be remembered for who he was, not defined by rumours about how he died.
Why we are raising £15,000
Our family has created this GoFundMe to help us give Joel the farewell he deserves, obtain independent legal advice as we seek answers about his death, and support his grieving mother.
The money raised will go towards:
- £5,000 — Funeral and memorial expenses: To give Joel a dignified and loving farewell.
- £5,000 — Independent legal representation and investigation-related costs: To help our family understand what happened and participate in any relevant investigations or legal proceedings.
- £4,000 — Support for Joel's mother and family: To help with essential living expenses and immediate financial needs while she grieves and cares for her family, including her newborn baby.
- £1,000 — Fundraising fees and unforeseen expenses: To cover transaction fees and unexpected costs connected with the purposes above.
These are provisional estimates, and we will keep supporters informed of any significant changes in how the funds are used.
We understand that times are difficult for many people, and we would never want anyone to feel pressured to donate.
Even if you cannot contribute financially, simply sharing Joel's story would mean so much to us.
For our Joel
Joel was only 18. He should have had so much more time.
More birthdays, more laughter, more memories with the people who loved him.
We will never get those moments back.
We cannot bring Joel home, but we can honour his memory and do everything we reasonably can to understand what happened to him.
He went to hospital because he needed help. His family never imagined they would lose him.
Please help us give Joel the farewell he deserves, support his mother through this unimaginable loss and seek the answers our family needs.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your kindness, generosity and support.
Joel. For his mother. For the truth.
With love and gratitude,
The Family of Joel Sousa
Forever 18. Forever loved. Never forgotten.
