The Story
As a Jewish high school Physics teacher, I was heartbroken to see posters in classrooms at my Oakland charter school claiming such things as ‘Israel is committing genocide.’ These are not just false political statements; they echo anti-Semitic rhetoric that fuels hate. I have always encouraged open dialogue and differing perspectives, but when the narrative becomes one-sided and hateful, it stops being educational and becomes dangerous.
This issue isn’t isolated. Across the nation, instances of anti-Semitism linked to these teachings are rising. At UC Berkeley, Jewish students reported being excluded from events due to their support for Israel. High schools in New York saw pro-Palestinian student walkouts turn into verbal assaults on Jewish classmates. And at Stanford University, an instructor was removed for telling Jewish students to stand in a corner because they are ‘colonizers.’
I brought my concerns to the administration. I proposed dialogue, mutual education, and the removal of these posters. Instead, I was dismissed and offered hush money to not disparage the school. I didn't sign the offer. This is not just about one school—it’s a growing problem that impacts Jewish students and educators nationwide.
My name is Ezra Barany. Born and raised in Oakland, California, I've been proud to teach at Oakland schools until this school year.
I am not going to file a lawsuit for wrongful termination, though I could.
Instead, I am filing a lawsuit against this school to demand accountability for what it teaches our students and ensure our classrooms are places of education, not indoctrination. This isn’t just my fight; it’s a stand for every student, teacher, and family who believes schools should be safe from hate.
Not a single penny will go to my pocket. Instead, the funds will go for the costs of filing the lawsuit and the legal fees.
My lawyer, David Rosenberg-Wohl, is committed to fighting anti-Semitism, which is why he has joined me to work pro bono. However, your help can provide him with the tools he needs to build a strong case.
The case may take as long as two years.
Join my voice, and I will keep you updated on the progress.
