Justice for Javen: Support His Family's Fight

Hello,

My name is Jules and on June 1st my family received word that my brother Javen had passed away due to medical negligence while incarcerated in Terra Haute Federal Prison. Javen leaves behind 3 children and only had 9 more months left of his sentence before returning home.

Javen was serving time for a crime committed when he was 18 while in active addiction.

Javen knew he had made mistakes and was more than happy to serve his time and make the wrong, right. Javen was actively working through a program to be released and was ready for a fresh start in life.

On June 1st, my family received word that Javen had passed. We had no context and no one to answer our questions regarding what happened. We later learned that he had passed a whole 24 hours prior to the prison confirming he had passed and we received no notice. After this, we simply wanted to know how it happened and why and the prison refused to give us any further information and also refused to answer our calls on how to simply get Javen back to Oregon to be with his family. The prison then withheld his body and started rejecting all calls coming through from Oregon and we had no answers or direction on how to proceed all while trying to mourn and process what had happened.

Javen was serving his sentence as he should with the intent on returning home to his family just to never make that return.

Our family resorted to social media and blowing up the prisons phone for help. During our outcry on social media, we had an inmates family member reach out to us and gave us guidance on what had happened because he had witnessed it first hand. Four days eventually passed with no word from the prison, and then we learned they halted visitation to cover up their crime.

We learned that Javen had been complaining of stomach pain and asking for help with his diabetes for DAYS. The prison guards refused to help him and told him he was lying. Javen no longer could walk and the prison STILL ignored him. He then become unresponsive and passed away alone in his cell, according to the witness. While incarcerated in federal prisons for 3 years, he has reached a diabetic coma 3 times now.

The prison then later released FALSE information regarding his death to the media before reaching out to the family. They also gave us contradictory information saying that he may have passed away in the hospital. We still aren’t sure what is true because there were so many different accounts to the situation. It was also very clear that the prison did not want to communicate with us.

We still have yet to find the answers we need but we are seeking legal action. We now know that this isn’t the first nor the last time this has happened in a federal prison and someone NEEDS to answer so we can reach some kind of reform so this doesn’t happen to the next person.

Terra Haute is supposed to be an advanced medical facility to aide to people incarcerated with medical limitations and needs for monitoring.

This go fund me is to help pay for legal action, burial, and funds for his children who now no longer have a father due to something that could have simply been fixed with a lollipop.

While seeking help financially, we are also devastated and would appreciate any advice on what to do next even if you cannot donate.
