This past month, Cisco was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in San Diego. Though California has been home to Cisco and his family since he was barely three years old, the United States has ordered him to return back to Honduras, a country in which he not only has no memories, but no family, community, or support to rely on should he be forcibly removed. San Diego and Los Angeles are the cities in which Cisco has formed his identity and established entire communities of those who love and rely on him.
After a month in an immigration detention facility, Cisco was released on $3,000 bond with help from a private attorney. In the immigration system, our country refuses to provide individuals with any constitutional rights, therefore leaving them with no legal or financial assistance. Consequently, this means the majority of individuals are left to represent themselves, without knowledge of the arbitrary legal processes or requirements for defense, and the reality for these individuals is incredibly bleak: most are deported back to places that are often unfamiliar and life-threatening. Without our help, this could be Cisco too.
And the costs in no way stop with bond-- now that he's released, he is responsible for funding his future legal representation in his deportation proceedings and court costs, and will also need to repay his family who originally paid for his bond and lawyer.
He is currently living with his mother and four younger brothers in LA while he tries to rebuild the security and stability he made for himself prior to the arrest. Unfortunately, his mother's apartment has limited space and his immediate family can no longer afford to provide financial assistance.
Cisco is doing everything within his capacity to raise money, though now that he has been criminalized and his information recorded in federal databases, he has been denied access to jobs, housing, or any public assistance.
While no person should be forced to endure detainment and possible deportation, California is and has always been home to Cisco and to all who know and love him.
That's why I'm asking you all to offer Cisco any financial support that you are able and willing to. Any amount, no matter how small, is incredibly appreciated and would go a long way. Especially under our current administration, it's crucial that those of us with the privilege to support and enact change protect fellow Americans who are denied the liberties we so often take for granted.
