Intelligent, confident women of color often face retaliation for daring to challenge the established order. In today’s world, they are too often harassed, gaslit, isolated, and forced out of institutions that should celebrate their brilliance.
On November 1st, 2025, we lost Dr. Nozipho Becker—a beloved wife, mother, scholar, and advocate—after months of unimaginable workplace discrimination and retaliation in a DEI focused division at a university. Her passing is a devastating reminder of the toll systemic racism and institutional injustice take on Black women in academia.
A Life of Perseverance and Purpose
Nozipho’s journey was one of extraordinary resilience. Born in Eswatini in a small village with mud and thatch huts, she rose from humble beginnings through sheer determination and a deep belief in the power of education. At age 12 she started working to pay her own high school tuition fees, during summers picking cotton by hand in hot fields and then other times as a housemaid for wealthy families, she soon earned enough to begin her education. A gifted student, she was accepted to university and acquired her first degree in Nutrition Science. She was later awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to pursue graduate studies in the United States.
She went on to complete her Masters then her PhD in Public Health, conducting groundbreaking research to improve access to health care and nutrition for women living with HIV in Eswatini. Her life’s work centered on empowering others—especially women in marginalized communities—to live with dignity and health.
A Voice Silenced by Injustice
When Nozipho started a new career opportunity in the US, she brought along not only her expertise but also her commitment to equity and truth. However, soon after beginning her role, she was met with discrimination and hostility for speaking out against inequities in research and representation.
Within just two months, the abuse began. She was marginalized—denied access to essential resources, given unfair performance reviews, and excluded from professional opportunities. Her courage to challenge unethical practices through official channels and to advocate for women of color in academia made her a target.
Despite enduring continuous gaslighting and isolation, Nozipho stood firm in her values. She filed formal complaints, documented the injustices she faced, and refused to be silent. She fought not just for herself, but for every Black woman who has been told to “stay quiet” to survive in spaces that refuse to see their worth, and every woman of color that might come after her and face similar abuse within that division.
The Cost of Courage
The relentless strain of discrimination, professional sabotage, and withheld wages and opportunities for advancement took an immense toll on Nozipho’s health and well-being. Her family (her devoted husband and her 9-year-old son) stood by her side through every challenge, supporting her as she sought justice in a system that repeatedly failed her. But in the end, the evil she faced was just too much to bear.
Nozipho’s passing leaves behind an irreplaceable void in the hearts of her loved ones and all who were inspired by her brilliance, warmth, and unwavering moral compass.
