Justice for Dr. Jay
After being subjected to severe bullying by his employer, including 24 hour a day call, 365 days a year and suffering what many call burnout, but might be better called moral injury, Dr. Jacob Neufeld took his own life. If my husband hadn’t spoken out against these unsafe practices, he would still be alive today. Since then I have tried to hold his employer accountable for their actions, but I am now nearing the end of my funds after successfully winning the right to sue by the Idaho Supreme Court.
Right now hospitals have the right to separate doctors from their families, and force them into unproven treatment facilities, for indefinite amounts of time, even if it’s for complaining about unsafe medical practices or working conditions. In Jay’s case, he was forced into a drug and alcohol rehab center, out of state, despite the fact he didn’t have any addiction issues, simply for advocating for patient safely. Without independent checks and balances, hospitals can use their power over a physician’s career to retaliate against those that advocate for patients over profits.
As Jacob Neufeld’s widow, I’m asking for donations to fund the last stretch of this lawsuit, to help end bullying and protect the rights of physicians and their families. The outcome of this case will directly impact how hospitals treat their medical staff. I can’t bring Jay back, but I can do my part to see that this doesn’t happen to another physician and their family.
