Hi everyone, my name is Kacie and I am Channing’s mom. On September 26, 2023, our 14-year-old son Channing rode his bike to a friend's house and would never return home. On this day at 10:42 pm, my husband received a video call from Channing's friend that I answered, and the image is burned into my brain. My son's friend was claiming that our son Channing had shot himself as he showed me Channing lying on the floor bleeding. I immediately hopped out of bed and called 911 as I made the 5-minute drive in 3 to his friend's house. I ran in the door to see my baby boy Channing lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to his head. NO GUN ANYWHERE NEAR CHANNING AND THE ONLY OTHER PERSON THERE WAS HIS FRIEND. Channing was rushed to Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC, where he succumbed to his injuries on September 28, 2023, at 12:39 pm.
What we were unaware of was his friend's mother was not at home with the kids, and Channing and his friend were there by themselves. As I spoke with his friend's mother later that evening after Channing had passed away, she told us that her son had called her first, and she hung up and claimed she had called 911, but in fact, she did NOT! I was the only 911 caller. The story of what happened through his friend's mother has not stayed consistent. We have been told multiple different stories from his friend's mother as well as from the detectives as to what happened that night. REMINDER SHE WAS NOT THERE THAT NIGHT. IT WAS ONLY CHANNING AND HER SON. Things do not add up nor make sense as to what we have been told. Yadkin County Sheriff’s Department handled the investigation, and there was very little to NO physical evidence collected. NO GUNSHOT RESIDUE TEST, NO FINGERPRINTING OF THE GUN, NO TIMELINE OF WHEN HIS FRIEND CALLED HIS MOTHER TO WHEN HE CALLED US, THEY DID NOT EVEN ASK NOR ATTEMPT TO GET CHANNING’S MEDICAL RECORDS, NOR DO THEY EVEN HAVE THE MEDICAL EXAMINER'S REPORT. JUST THE WORD OF HIS 14-YEAR-OLD FRIEND. We were told misinformation by Yadkin County Sheriff’s Department as to why evidence was not collected, and the case was closed in a very short time, being only 6 days after this horrific incident occurred.
Now the Yadkin County, NC sheriff’s office refuses to release the investigative reports. A motion has to be filed in Superior Court, and the attorney quoted me $5000.00 to petition for a court order to release the records. Our family does not have the extra funds on hand, or I would not be asking for help.
