Justice for Abuja Area Mama: Support the fight for LGBTQ+ rights in Nigeria
One year. No justice. No investigation. We won't let her death be forgotten.
On August 8, 2024, Ifeanyi Chukwu-Agah Benedict—beloved by many as Abuja Area Mama—was brutally murdered in Abuja, Nigeria. Her body was stripped and dumped by the roadside. Despite the shocking nature of this hate crime, not a single arrest has been made. Not one suspect questioned. No investigation completed.
Area Mama was more than a victim—she was a beacon of joy and authenticity in Nigeria's LGBTQ+ community. Known for her infectious dance videos and fierce self-expression, she brought light to countless lives through her bold celebration of who she was.
Her life mattered. Her voice mattered. Justice must be served.
Why We're Fighting
After a full year of police inaction, Minority Watch has filed a landmark lawsuit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1584/2025) at the Federal High Court in Abuja to force the Nigeria Police Force to do their job.
We're seeking:
- An order compelling police to investigate Area Mama's murder
- Justice for the perpetrators
- A legal declaration that this failure violates constitutional rights
- Accountability for a system that treats LGBTQ+ lives as disposable
This isn't just about one case—it's about every LGBTQ+ Nigerian living in fear. In a country where queer people face routine violence, kidnapping, and murder with complete impunity, this lawsuit represents a turning point.

"The right to life is sacrosanct. To ignore such a heinous crime is to send a dangerous message that some lives do not matter. We cannot allow that precedent to stand." — Chizelu Emejulu, Executive Director
