UPDATE: Jairo's family got in contact with Jairo and his dad. Due to his dad's recent cancer reoccurrence, they are now going to fight the deportation order to stay in the US. The funds we have raised have already helped the family and now are especially important due to added legal fees. Thanks for supporting Jairo and his family. They extend their deepest gratitude.
Our beloved North High student Jairo was recently detained. He was abducted by ICE officers from the night shift at his job. His dad was detained the week prior. Both were located in El Paso the day after his abduction.
Their family came here from Ecuador seeking asylum and better treatment for his dad who has cancer. Jairo is a college bound scholar, who worked every night after school to help support his mom and siblings at home.
We have already tried everything in our power to bring Jairo back to Minnesota, but at this point, the family feels it would be better to have him self-deport to Ecuador, rather than having him sit in a detention center for months.
The Northside community is raising money to assist Jairo and his father in their safe return to Ecuador or for legal fees should they choose to appeal their case.
