Justice Carpenter's Memorial and Medical Expenses

On May 5th Justice was feeling ill and began having seizures. After arriving at Augusta Health Center he had had a third, tests were run, and he was sent to UVA where an MRI showed inflammation on the brain. Treatment and further testing was initiated. After a few promising days, on May 14th Justice began having seizures again leading to the need for a sensor to be put in his head a few days later to monitor the pressure. He was given medication that paralyzes him to help take a lot the of demand off of his brain so that the pressure can stay where it needs to be and is being monitored with an EEG.

On May 18th, Justice took a turn for the worse, resulting in a craniotomy. They removed some of the skull bone in the front of his head to help with the swelling. The surgery went well and seems to be providing some relief. He has been stable since the craniotomy. They are planning to start weening him off of the paralytics soon. He has been tested for COVID-19 twice, which was negative both times. He is getting a chest tube put in to remove some of the fluid near his lung and they are putting a PICC line in his arm. He currently has a central line in his femoral artery and has higher chance of infection especially whenever his does start having bowel movements.

The family is waiting on test results for a more definitive answer to the cause of this situation though it is suspected to be autoimmune encephalitis, and possibly an encephalitis that they don't know much about. They are considering giving him some medicine that will suppress his immune system but before they can do that they have to check to make sure he doesn't have any autoimmune diseases that would contradict the medication. He still has a long way to go, but is heading in the right direction. After speaking briefly with his mother, we extended family, feel that some assistance meeting their insurance deductible and related expenses would be a great relief during this time. So we are asking YOU to help by donating anything that you can (no amount is too small) and/or sharing this fundraiser. The family also welcomes and appreciates everyone's prayers for healing and recovery as they navigate this frightening situation.
