Roberto Alvarez Sr. was a humble, hardworking man from Michoacán, Mexico. At 18, he moved to the United States in connection to the U.S.A Bracero Program, and helped his 10 younger siblings make their way to the U.S. as well. He started out harvesting apples and strawberries in Fremont, then moved to San Francisco, where he would plant his roots for over fifty years. He worked in a laundry, then at Chevron Corporation as a custodian, helping his family of origin buy their first home, providing housing stability and building a life full of love and community.
Roberto and his wife Laura shared nearly 50 years together, raising their children and embracing their granddaughter as their own. Their life story, full of shared moments, was cut tragically short by a hit-and-run driver, someone who is still on the run, leaving Laura with an empty seat at the table and a longing to see the head of her household. At 80, Roberto was healthy, strong, and independent, with plans for travel and more time with loved ones.
On December 17, 2025, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Roberto was crossing the street to reach a local restaurant in his neighborhood, a part of his weekly evening routine, at the intersection of Mission Street and Naglee Avenue in San Francisco, a community he had called home for over 50 years. He had crossed this intersection countless times before. He was almost to the other side when, out of nowhere, a car approached a red light at high speed and didn’t stop. The vehicle ran over Roberto, ending his life in an instant and leaving Laura and the community shocked, heartbroken, and devastated.
Roberto Sr. was a steady pillar for his entire family, being the only sibling to take the responsibility to care for his mother for an entire decade. He was deeply involved in the raising of his only granddaughter and was involved in her life in all the ways that mattered. Roberto shared his gift of music with the community that was inspired to join him when he sang and uplifted the hearts and spirits of all who heard him sing. He always put family first, turning down opportunities for fame to stay close to those he loved. His life was a testament to love, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

El 17 de Diciembre de 2025, aproximadamente a las 6:00 p.m., Roberto cruzaba la calle para llegar a un restaurante local de su vecindario, parte de su rutina semanal por la tarde, en la intersección de Mission Street y Naglee Avenue en San Francisco, una comunidad que había llamado hogar durante más de 50 años. Había cruzado esa intersección en innumerables ocasiones. Estaba a punto de llegar al otro lado cuando, de repente, un vehículo se aproximó a un semáforo en rojo a alta velocidad y no se detuvo. El automóvil atropelló a Roberto, terminando con su vida en un instante y dejando a Laura y a la comunidad en estado de shock, con el corazón roto y profundamente devastados.
Roberto Sr. fue un pilar constante para toda su familia, siendo el único de sus hermanos que asumió la responsabilidad de cuidar a su madre durante una década completa. Estuvo profundamente involucrado en la crianza de su única nieta, participando en su vida de todas las maneras que realmente importan. Roberto compartió su don musical con la comunidad, inspirando a otros a unirse cuando cantaba y elevando los corazones y espíritus de todos los que lo escuchaban. Siempre puso a la familia por encima de todo, rechazando oportunidades de fama para permanecer cerca de quienes amaba. Su vida fue un testimonio de amor, sacrificio y compromiso inquebrantable.
