Amidst a high-risk pregnancy and now postpartum, my dear friend Elena trusted her ex-boyfriend (whom she was on good terms with) to watch and care for her beloved German Shepherd, Dexter. For four months, he refused to send updates or photos. When Elena was finally reunited with Dexter, she was horrified: he had lost over 40 pounds and was reduced to skin and bones.

When Elena went to file a police report, she discovered an active investigation already open against her ex-boyfriend. Witnesses allege he left Dexter and his own dogs outside in the scorching desert summer for days and weeks at a time without shade or water. Dexter survived a nightmare, and it is a miracle he is alive.

Dexter is safe now, but his fight is far from over. He requires ongoing veterinary care to safely regain weight and recover. Crucially, continuing his vet visits and bloodwork is vital to provide the legal proof needed for the open animal abuse case so his abuser faces justice.
