Hi! I am Bastien Carteni, a French artist based in Berlin.

I am currently studying at Catalyst, Institute for Creative Arts and Technology.

Today I am asking for your help for my final year project, "Just A Look".

What is the project?

Just A Look is an audiovisual project with a social experiment perspective. Along with many talented artists, I created 4 audiovisual portraits based on the gaze of diverse volunteers.

What is the goal?

Through this creation, I want people to reflect more on the look they give to anyone crossing their path.

The idea is to push them to take a second to properly look and realise how important, or not, their point of view is on another person’s life.

I also want to put stress on the distortion of reality caused by the cascade effect.

How is the project created?

By filming a volunteer, I wanted to create a cascade effect reaction.

How? Here is the process:

1- Film a volunteer in the street with a Film Director (Minh Larsen).

2- Show the shot to 4 different anonymous people and ask them to analyse it by following a questionnaire.

3- Interpret their feedback by making an audio creation.

4- Create an audio video portraits based on the footage shot during step 1 and send them to a Touch Designer Artist (@Auratyk) to add a distortion to the reality of the video.

5- In parallel, send the audio to a Painter (Tiphaine Carteni) to do an interpretation of the audio.

6- On top of that, send the audio and a pitch of the project to a graphic designer (Hugo Jean) to create posters.

7- Show the final audio-portraits and paintings to the audience.

8- Invite the audience to write about what they felt in a book.

By this effect, any interpretation will be different, and the result will be interpreted personally by each person.

Why do I need your help?

Creating this project involves many artists, but also resources.

The artists’ work and equipment have a cost value. To ensure a great result and reward artists who spent their time on this project, I need your help.

All your funds will go either to the artists: video director, visual artist, painter and graphic designer; or to the equipment and facilities needed: gear (octo surround system, screen, book, frame), rent of the exhibition place, recordings, transportation & logistics (including the gear), and insurance.

Why is this project important to me?

Just A Look is more than an artistic representation. Through this creation, I am going through introspection myself. The project triggered a deep thought process on my current position as an artist in society. By extent, it had me reflect on how my art can have a more profound purpose rather than just existing as music.

Creating is important to me, so if my art can also make people think and make their opinion evolve, it will blend pleasure with utility.
