Hi, i'm Fernanda Belmar. I am a Chilean filmmaking student at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, California. And this is my story:
My abuelita never finished high school. She found herself being single mother raising three kids. Going to college was a massive privildge that none of those three kids had. One of them got married, had kids, and found support within her own family. The second kid left the country and started a family abroad. The third child finished high school, and started working to help her mom. After a few years she found herself pregnant with the man she loved. That man is my father, and he left before I was born.
I am the only child of a single mother and a first-generation college student. I graduated with a bachelors degree in digital audiovisual communication in Chile and received the valedictorian award in 2018. I did my internship, and as soon as I finished it the company hired me to open an audiovisual communication area within the company.
Any kind of education is fundamental to me. It is something that allows us to grow emotionally, culturally, morally and intellectually. It's a discipline that I feel grateful to have and I know that it hasn't been easy to get. I came to United States to earn a master's degree in filmmaking, because while I was working on my bachelors I found myself so passionate about film and storytelling. I want to use my creativity and voice to spread awareness and tell real life stories. There are so many things that need to be talked about and changed in this world and I'm sure that art would be a good way to communicate this to the world. I want to be an exceptional artist that will be a part of this change.
To study at New York Film Academy, I received a loan from the Chilean government called CORFO, that only coveres 2 of 6 semesters, because even though I had 2 sponsors with a good job, that wasn't enough. To cover the other 4 semesters, I have applied for several scholarships in Chile and the US, with no success. I recently applied for one more called CONICYT, but I won't get a response until July. This is the issue. I need funding for my tuition by May 31st, 2019.
This is why I am asking for your help. All I need is $5 from 2,000 people to pay for my third semester. I know my goal is $20,000, but there is no garuntee that I will get the scholarship. If I achieve this goal I will have more time to figure out what I am going to do for my last 2 semesters of college.
I can't let the absence of money stop me from having a master degree. My education can not end here. My abuelita sacrificed her whole life for my mother and my mom sacrificed her whole life for me. They never truly got to live the life they wanted. Finishing school will give me the opportunity to live the life I want and give my mom the life she deserves.
I have to break the cycle.

Hola, soy Fernanda Belmar, Chilena. Estudiante de cine en New York Film Academy en Los Angeles, California y esta es mi historia:
Mi abuelita nunca terminó la escuela. Se dedicó a criar a sus dos últimas hijas e hijo como madre soltera. Ir a la universidad era un privilegio que ninguno de sus hijos pudo obtener. Una de ellas se casó, tuvo hijos y encontró apoyo dentro de la familia que formó. El hijo se fue para otro país y comenzó una familia allá. La última niña terminó el colegio, y comenzó a trabajar en seguida para ayudar a su mamá. Luego de unos años se enamoró y quedó embarazada de su pareja. Ese hombre es mi papá, quien se marchó antes de que yo naciera.
Soy hija única de madre soltera, y además soy la primera-generación que va a la universidad. Estudié comunicación audiovisual digital en Chile, en el último semestre al terminar mi práctica profesional la empresa me contrató para abrir un área audiovisual dentro del equipo digital. Meses posteriores en el año 2018 me titulé siendo honorada como mejor promedio dentro de la generación.
Todo tipo de educación para mi es fundamental, porque es algo que nos permite crecer emocional, moral, cultural, e intelectualmente. Es una formación de la cual me siento afortunada de tener, y que sé que no ha sido un camino fácil para llegar a ella. Vine a Estados Unidos para conseguir una maestría en cine, porque mientras estudiaba en la universidad descubrí la pasión que tenía por el cine, y por contar historias. Quiero usar mi creatividad y mi voz para generar conciencia. Quiero contar historias que son basadas en la vida real porque hay tantas cosas que necesitan ser contadas y cambiadas en el mundo, y soy una convencida de que cualquier tipo de arte es positivo para el mundo. Quiero ser una artista que es parte del cambio.
Para estudiar en New York Film Academy recibí el crédito CORFO del gobierno Chileno, el cual sólo cubrió 2 de 6 semestres, porque aunque tuviera 2 avales con buen trabajo, no era suficiente. Para cubrir los otros 4 semestres he aplicado a diferentes becas, tanto en Chile como en Estados Unidos, pero no he tenido éxito. Actualmente estoy aplicando a la beca CONICYT del gobierno de Chile también, pero no tendré respuesta hasta Julio. Ese es el problema. Necesito financiar mi tercer semestre antes de que comience. Debo conseguir el dinero de aquí al 31 de Mayo del 2019.
Es por esto que estoy pidiendo tu ayuda. Si 2.000 personas donan solo $5 dólares podría pagar mi tercer semestre. Puse mi meta en $20.000 dólares porque no hay ninguna garantía de que obtenga la beca, por lo tanto si alcanzó esta meta tendría más tiempo para buscar una solución de como financiar mis últimos 2 semestres.
No puedo dejar que la falta de dinero me detenga para obtener una maestría. Mi educación no puede para aquí. Mi abuelita sacrificó su vida por mi mamá, mi mamá ha sacrificado toda su vida por mi. Ellas nunca han vivido la vida que realmente deseaban. Terminar esta carrera me da la oportunidad de vivir la vida que quiero, y darle la vida que mi mamá merece.
Tengo que romper el ciclo.
