Hola soy Dani Davila y tengo 9 años. Mis papis son Dan Richard y Andreina.
El 24 de Abril de 2020 me diagnosticaron Leucemia Linfoblástica Aguda tipo B de alto riesgo dada la presencia de una mutación genética llamada Cromosoma Filadelfia.
Desde ese día la vida familiar tomó otro rumbo... uno donde tenemos poco control en la mayoría de las decisiones. Así, cambiamos mi uniforme escolar por pijamas de hospitalización y cambiamos nuestro hogar por la oportunidad en otro país de volver a tener una vida sana.
Durante dos meses luego de mi diagnóstico fui tratada en Venezuela, el lugar donde nacimos y al que llamábamos casa. Estuve hospitalizada la mayoría del tiempo ya que mi sistema inmunológico estaba muy suprimido. La pandemia y condiciones muy pobres de salubridad en el país, hacían que mi vida corriera peligro.
Entre hospitalizaciones, quimioterapia, exámenes médicos y cuidados especiales en casa, se gastaron aproximadamente US$40,000. Mis papis lo intentaron todo... recaudaron fondos... se endeudaron. Pero financieramente la situación era insostenible.
La imposibilidad de conseguir los medicamentos necesarios dada mi condición de alto riesgo, y de poder hacerme un transplante de médula en Venezuela fueron el punto de quiebre... El 4 de Julio de 2020 salimos de emergencia en un vuelo humanitario para continuar mi tratamiento en Madrid.
Desde ese momento estoy siendo atendida en el Hospital Niño Jesús. Aunque la mayoría de los costos asociados a mi tratamiento están cubiertos por la seguridad social, mi familia está bajo una presión financiera tremenda...
Ahora vivimos en un país nuevo, sin casa permanente y sin poder trabajar al menos mientras se regulariza nuestro estatus migratorio.
Ya se han gastado todos los fondos recolectados hasta la fecha por medio de esta campaña de GFM y aún tenemos que pagar la deuda asociada a mi tratamiento en Venezuela.

¿DE QUE SE TRATA EL DIAGNÓSTICO DE DANI?
La Leucemia Linfoblástica Aguda (LLA) Tipo B de alto riesgo Ph+ es un tipo de cáncer en la sangre y médula ósea.
La médula ósea es donde células madres se transforman en células sanguíneas: glóbulos blancos, glóbulos rojos y plaquetas.
Tener LLA tipo B significa que células madres generaron blastos, un tipo de glóbulos blancos que se multiplican agresivamente. Los blastos tienen mutaciones genéticas que los hacen incapaces de cumplir su función (combatir infecciones), y no permiten el ciclo de vida normal de un glóbulo blanco (multiplicarse, crecer y morir).
Su rápida reproducción y permanencia indefinida hacen que no haya espacio en la médula para la generación de células sanguíneas sanas, causando bajos niveles de estas en la sangre y por ende, elevado riesgo de infección, falta de oxígeno en los músculos, e incapacidad para reparar heridas.
Para erradicar blastos se aplica quimioterapia. Estos fármacos son tan fuertes que también matan células sanas.
Los pacientes de LLA son categorizados como estándar, alto riesgo y muy alto riesgo con el fin de determinar el protocolo de tratamiento adecuado.
En el caso de Dani la leucemia es clasificada de Alto Riesgo Ph+ debido a la presencia adicional de la mutación genética conocida como Cromosoma Filadelfia (Ph+). Esta tiene una implicación terapéutica, ya que en su presencia aumenta el crecimiento de células cancerígenas a pesar del tratamiento LLA estándar. Como consecuencia se aplica un protocolo de quimio más agresivo, y aumenta la probabilidad de requerir trasplante de médula para una completa recuperación.

On April 24, 2020 I was diagnosed with High Risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Type B Ph+.
From that day our lives took a different turn, one where we have little control over many decisions. In the blink of an eye, we changed my school uniform for hospital scrubs… we moved to a different country in order to pursue a treatment opportunity that could allow me to overcome cancer.
For the first two months after my diagnosis I was treated in Venezuela, the place where we were born and that we used to call home. During this period I was hospitalized most of the time as my immune system was severely compromised. In addition, the COVID19 pandemic along with poor sanitary conditions in the country, put my life constantly at risk.
Costs associated with hospital stays, chemotherapy, medical tests, and at home special care due to my condition, reached almost US$40,000. My parents did everything to keep going… they raised funds and incurred a ton of debt. Financially the situation was unsustainable.
The inability to find the drugs necessary to treat my high risk condition, and to have a stem cell transplant done in Venezuela were the breaking point… on July 4, 2020 we left the country in a humanitarian flight to continue my treatment in Madrid.
Since then I've been treated at the Hospital Niño Jesus. Even though most of the medical bills are covered, my family is in great financial distress…
We now live in a new country, with no permanent home and unable to work at least until my parents’ immigration paperwork is regularized. The funds raised through this GFM campaign have already been spent and we are yet to pay the debt incurred to cover the balance of my treatment in Venezuela.
Consequently we still need your help. Every dollar donated, allows us to stay in Madrid so that I can be treated. Every dollar is my opportunity to live a healthy life.

WHAT IS DANI'S DIAGNOSIS ABOUT?
High Risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) Type B is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow.
The bone marrow is where stem cells are transformed into blood cells: platelets, white and red blood cells.
Having ALL Type B means that certain stem cells produced Blastos, a type of white blood cells that multiply abnormally and aggressively. Blastos have genetic mutations that make them unable to perform the normal function of white blood cells (fight infections), and to follow normal cell cycles (multiply, grow, die).
Because Blastos multiply so quickly and stay alive indefinitely, there is no space in the bone marrow for the generation of healthy blood cells. As a consequence, their count in blood decreases significantly, resulting in elevated risk of infection, low oxygen levels in muscles, and the body's inability to repair wounds.
Chemotherapy is typically administered to kill Blastos. These drugs are so aggressive however, that they end up also killing healthy blood cells.
To determine the appropriate course of treatment, Leukemia is classified by risk: standard, high risk and very high risk.
Dani's ALL was categorized as high risk due to the presence of an additional mutation called Philadelphia Chromosome (Ph+). This mutation has an implication in the course of treatment because it makes the multiplication of Blastos possible despite the administration of standard ALL chemotherapy.
As a consequence, patients are administered more aggressive chemotherapy, and there is a higher chance of requiring a stem cell transplant for a successful recovery.
